Can ChatGPT read my iCloud email and calendar?

Last checked: 28 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Yes. Since 27 October 2026, ChatGPT has iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins. Once you connect them, ChatGPT can search and read your iCloud email, manage messages and drafts, send email, look up your iCloud contacts, and read, add and change calendar events. OpenAI says the plugins are on all ChatGPT plans, on the web, the desktop app and iPhone. You connect each one separately with an Apple app-specific password, never your normal Apple password. Everything below was checked on OpenAI's help centre, Apple Support and the launch coverage on 28 October 2026.

What has changed?

Short answer: iCloud users can now plug their Apple email and calendar into ChatGPT, as Gmail and Outlook users already could.

Until now, ChatGPT could connect to Gmail, Google Calendar and Outlook, but not to Apple's own email and calendar. On 27 October 2026 the official ChatGPT account announced iCloud Mail and Calendar plugins, "available on all ChatGPT plans on web, desktop, and iOS" (as quoted by 9to5Mac). According to MacRumors:

  • iCloud Mail: ChatGPT can search and read your mail, manage messages and drafts, send email and look up iCloud contacts.
  • iCloud Calendar: ChatGPT can read, schedule and update events that show in the iPhone Calendar app or any app that uses iCloud Calendar.

OpenAI's help page adds that both plugins include read-only contact lookup, and that separate Contacts and Reminders plugins are not part of this launch.

Can ChatGPT read my iCloud email?

Short answer: only if you connect it, and only the iCloud mailbox itself.

The Mail plugin works with Apple addresses ending in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com. It can't see other accounts you've added to the iPhone Mail app, such as Gmail, Outlook or a mailbox from your web host. If your business email is a Google or Microsoft account, use those apps instead: see can I add ChatGPT to Outlook?.

Plenty of sole traders started out on a free @icloud.com or @me.com address and never moved. If that's you, this is the first time ChatGPT can help with that inbox directly.

How do I connect iCloud Mail and Calendar to ChatGPT?

Short answer: make an app-specific password at Apple, then paste it into ChatGPT's Plugins settings.

Apple only lets you make app-specific passwords if your Apple Account has two-factor authentication switched on, so check that first.

  1. Sign in at account.apple.com. In Sign-In and Security, choose App-Specific Passwords, then Generate an app-specific password. Name it something like "ChatGPT Mail" so you know what it's for.
  2. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, and choose iCloud Mail.
  3. Enter your iCloud Mail address (ending @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com) and paste the app-specific password into the connection form. OpenAI says never use your normal Apple password, and never paste a password into a chat.
  4. For the calendar, repeat the steps with iCloud Calendar. This time enter your primary Apple Account email, which may not be the same as your iCloud Mail address. Connecting one plugin doesn't connect the other.
  5. In a chat, type @ and pick the plugin, or open the + menu, then ask your question.

OpenAI's help centre says an app has to be available for your plan, region, account and device, so if you can't see the plugins under Settings, Plugins, they may not have reached your account yet. The launch coverage mentions no UK restriction, but we haven't tested it on a UK account.

What can a UK trade actually use it for?

Short answer: catching up on your inbox, finding old emails, and keeping the diary straight from your phone.

Some jobs it suits:

  • Morning catch-up: "Summarise unread emails from yesterday. List anything that needs a reply today, and anything that looks like a new enquiry."
  • Finding a job's history: "Find every email from [customer name] since June and list what was agreed, with dates."
  • Supplier paperwork: "Find emails from [supplier] with invoices attached this month and list the dates and amounts mentioned." Check the totals against the invoices themselves before anything goes in your books. Our guide to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax explains why your records need to be right.
  • Booking work in: "Add a quote visit at [address] on Thursday at 2pm for 45 minutes, called [customer surname] quote." Then open the Calendar app and check it landed on the right day.
  • Draft replies: "Draft a polite reply to the last email from [customer] confirming Tuesday at 8am and asking them to clear the drive." Read it, change anything that's wrong, then send it yourself.

Two prompts worth saving:

Look through my iCloud Mail from the last 7 days. Make a table of new customer enquiries: name, what they want, where, and whether I've replied. Don't open or summarise anything marked personal. Don't send anything.

Check my iCloud Calendar for next week. Flag any days with jobs back to back and no travel time, and any gaps of two hours or more where I could fit a quote visit. Don't change any events.

Ending with "don't send anything" or "don't change any events" is a sensible habit while you learn how it behaves. For more prompts for the admin side, see ChatGPT prompts for small business admin.

Does it cost anything?

Short answer: no extra charge was announced; it comes with whichever ChatGPT plan you have.

OpenAI's announcement says the plugins are on all ChatGPT plans, including Free. Paid plans give you more usage in general, but there's no separate iCloud fee. For what each plan costs in the UK, see how much you pay for ChatGPT in the UK.

Is it safe to let ChatGPT into my email?

Short answer: it can be, if you treat the connection like giving someone a spare key.

Your inbox holds customers' names, addresses, phone numbers and sometimes photos of their homes. Connecting it gives ChatGPT access to all of that. Under UK GDPR you're still responsible for how that information is handled.

  • Use a password made only for ChatGPT. That way you can cut it off without touching anything else.
  • Know how to switch it off. Disconnecting in ChatGPT stops future access, but OpenAI says it doesn't revoke the password at Apple. Remove it at account.apple.com, in App-Specific Passwords, too. Apple allows up to 25 active app-specific passwords, and changing your main Apple password revokes them all.
  • Check your data settings. On personal plans, look at whether "Improve the model for everyone" is on. Our pages on is ChatGPT safe for business? and can I put customer data into ChatGPT? cover the rules.
  • Watch the send button. The Mail plugin can send email. OpenAI says ChatGPT may ask for approval before reading information or taking an action, but read every draft yourself before you say yes.
  • Mixed inboxes. If your iCloud address is also your personal email, ChatGPT can search the lot, including family and medical messages. A separate business address is cleaner.

Limits and risks

  • iCloud only. Gmail, Outlook or host mailboxes in the iPhone Mail app aren't covered by this plugin.
  • No Reminders or full Contacts yet. Contact lookup is read-only, and Reminders isn't included.
  • It can get things wrong. AI summaries can miss an email or misread a date. Check anything that matters, especially money and appointments.
  • Two passwords to manage. Mail and Calendar connect separately, and reconnecting one doesn't fix the other.
  • It's brand new. The plugins launched on 27 October 2026, and some sources differ on how they work with other ChatGPT features. Expect changes.
