Can I add ChatGPT to Outlook?
Short answer
Yes. ChatGPT has Outlook Email and Outlook Calendar apps you connect from ChatGPT settings. Once connected, ChatGPT can search, summarise and reference your emails and calendar and draft replies for you to send. It does not sit inside Outlook itself. Microsoft's own Copilot is built into Outlook, and Claude offers an Outlook add-in on paid plans.
How to connect Outlook to ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps.
- Find Outlook Email or Outlook Calendar and choose Connect.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and approve the permissions.
- Ask things like "Summarise unread emails from yesterday" or "Draft a reply to the last email from the accountant".
On ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, an admin decides which actions are allowed, and a Microsoft admin may need to approve permissions for your organisation.
What it can and cannot do
OpenAI says the Outlook Email app can search and read messages in your mailbox, look up people and manage contacts where enabled. Drafts come back in ChatGPT for you to copy or send. Check every draft before it goes out.

Is it safe?
Connecting gives the AI access to everything in that mailbox. On a personal plan, check whether training on your data is switched off. For business email, use ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, which OpenAI says does not train on your data by default. See does ChatGPT Business train on my data?
