Is ChatGPT safe to use for my business?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

ChatGPT is safe enough for everyday business writing if you follow a few rules: keep customers' personal details and confidential figures out of personal accounts, turn off model training, check every answer before it goes out, and don't let it make decisions about people. The bigger risks are wrong answers and careless data sharing, not hacking.

The real risks

  1. Personal data. Pasting a customer's name, address, phone number or health details into a personal ChatGPT account means sharing it with OpenAI. Under UK GDPR you're responsible for that. See can I put customer data into ChatGPT?
  2. Training. On Free, Go, Plus and Pro, OpenAI may use conversations to improve its models unless you switch it off. Business and Enterprise workspaces aren't used for training by default.
  3. Wrong answers. ChatGPT can invent facts, prices, laws and references. A confident wrong answer in a quote or a contract is your problem, not OpenAI's.
  4. Fake apps and scams. Only use chatgpt.com or OpenAI's official apps.

Seven rules for a small business

  1. Use placeholders: "[customer]", "[address]", "[£ amount]".
  2. Turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings, Data controls.
  3. Use Temporary chat for anything sensitive; OpenAI says those chats aren't used for training and may be kept for up to 30 days for safety.
  4. Check facts, numbers and legal wording against the source.
  5. Don't use it to decide who gets a job, a refund or credit without a person reviewing.
  6. Turn on two-factor authentication on the account.
  7. Write it down in a one-page AI policy so staff know the rules. We have a free AI policy template.

Is a business plan safer?

ChatGPT Business and Enterprise add admin controls, and OpenAI offers a Data Processing Addendum (DPA) where it acts as your processor. If staff handle customer data in ChatGPT regularly, a business plan with a DPA is the cleaner route than personal accounts. See is ChatGPT GDPR compliant?

Related questions

Can OpenAI staff read my chats?

Don't treat any AI chat as private. OpenAI's privacy policy sets out when it accesses content; the safe habit is to type nothing you wouldn't put in an email to a supplier.

Is Microsoft Copilot or Gemini safer?

The same rules apply to every AI assistant. Business versions of Copilot and Gemini also offer contractual data protection; free consumer versions follow consumer terms.
