What an invoice must include

GOV.UK says an invoice must include a unique identification number, your business name, address and contact details, the customer's name and address, a clear description of what you're charging for, the supply date, the invoice date, the amounts, any VAT, and the total owed. Sole traders must also include their own name and, if they use a business name, an address where legal documents can be delivered. Limited companies must use the full company name from the certificate of incorporation (GOV.UK).

If you're VAT registered, a full VAT invoice also needs your VAT number, the time of supply, and for each line the quantity, unit price, VAT rate and amount excluding VAT, plus the total VAT in sterling (VAT Notice 700/21, section 4.1). For reverse-charge construction work, the invoice must say the reverse charge applies; HMRC's example wording is "Customer to pay the VAT to HMRC" (HMRC). If a contractor deducts CIS, check the figure with the CIS calculator.
