Voicemail greeting generator
Write a short, professional voicemail greeting for your trade and situation: on a job, out of hours, on holiday or in an emergency trade. It adds the right safety number where it matters and estimates how long it takes to read aloud. It runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
How to use it
- Pick your trade and situation, and fill in when you'll call back. Only promise a time you can keep.
- Copy the script and record it on your phone's voicemail settings, somewhere quiet. Optional: paste the prompt into ChatGPT to make it sound more like you.
- Make one for each situation (on a job, out of hours, holiday) and switch between them.
- Missing a lot of calls? Count them with the missed call cost calculator and see whether an AI receptionist would pay for itself.
Worked example
A heating engineer on a job gets: "Hi, you've reached Smith Heating, Dave speaking. I'm on a job at the moment and can't get to the phone. Please leave your name, number, your postcode and a few words about the job, and I'll call you back within two hours, Monday to Friday. You can also text this number or book at smithheating.co.uk. If you smell gas, don't wait for us: call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999. Thanks for calling." That is about 75 words, around 30 seconds.
Safety numbers it adds
- Gas. For plumbers and heating engineers, anyone who suspects a gas leak should call the National Gas Emergency number, 0800 111 999 (HSE, checked 17 October 2026).
- Power cuts. For electricians, 105 is the free number for power cuts in England, Scotland and Wales (Power Cut 105).

Questions
What should a business voicemail greeting say?
Your business name, that you can't take the call right now, what to leave (name, number, postcode and the job), when you'll call back, and any other way to reach you. Keep it under 30 seconds.
How long should a voicemail greeting be?
Around 20 to 30 seconds, which is about 50 to 75 words read at a relaxed pace. Longer greetings make callers hang up.
Should a plumber's voicemail mention gas emergencies?
Yes. Anyone who smells gas should call 0800 111 999 straight away rather than wait for a callback, so it's worth saying in your greeting.
Is there a free voicemail greeting generator?
Yes. This page writes a greeting for your trade and situation in your browser, free and with no sign-up, and estimates how long it takes to read aloud.
Can AI answer my calls instead of voicemail?
Yes. AI receptionists answer, ask your questions and text you a summary. Prices run from free (Smith.ai, 25 calls a month) upwards; see AI receptionist cost UK.
