Can AI compare two documents?
Short answer
Yes. Upload both documents to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot and ask it to list the differences, for example between two quotes, contract versions or supplier terms. AI is good at summarising what changed in meaning. For an exact line-by-line record, Microsoft Word's built-in Compare tool is more reliable, and it is free with Word.
Two ways to compare
1. Word Compare (exact changes)
In Word, go to Review, then Compare, then Compare two versions. Pick the original and revised files. Word shows every insertion and deletion as tracked changes. Google Docs offers version history for files edited in Docs.
2. AI comparison (meaning and impact)
Upload both files and ask: "Compare these two contracts. List every difference in a table with the clause, the old wording, the new wording and what it means for me. Flag anything about payment, liability or cancellation."
When to use which
- Legal or price documents: use Word Compare for the exact edits, then AI to explain them.
- Two supplier quotes: AI is quicker for a side-by-side summary of price, scope and terms.
- Long reports: AI can summarise the main changes between drafts.
Accuracy
AI can miss small changes or claim something changed when it did not. Check anything important against the documents themselves. See what is an AI hallucination?
