Missed call text generator

Write a polite text to send when you miss a customer's call: who you are, when you'll call back and how to book or send details. Paste it into your phone's auto-reply or a text-back app. It runs in your browser and nothing is stored.

How to use it

1. Paste the text into your phone's auto-reply, your business phone app or a missed-call text-back tool. See our guide to missed-call text-back tools.
2. Say when you'll call back and keep that promise. "Within the hour" only works if it's true.
3. Ask for the details you need to quote, such as postcode and the job, so the call-back is quicker.
4. If your work has safety risks, add the right emergency advice. For a suspected gas leak, the National Gas Emergency Service number is 0800 111 999.

Worked example

A plumber on a job misses a call. The caller gets: "Hi, Gary from Coldstream Plumbing here. Sorry, I'm on a job and can't answer. I'll call you back within the hour. The UK rules behind it

• A reply to their call is customer service. The ICO describes service messages as non-promotional messages for administrative or customer service purposes (ICO: identify direct marketing, checked 18 October 2026).
• Keep the pitch out. If a service message contains direct marketing, even as a side point, the ICO says it counts as direct marketing, and the marketing consent rules apply.
• Their number is personal data. Use it to deal with their enquiry, not for unrelated marketing (ICO: data protection principles).

Your name and business, a short apology, when you'll call back and what details would help. Keep it under 300 characters.

Is a missed call text marketing?

Not if it only deals with their call. The ICO treats non-promotional customer service messages as service messages. Adding an offer would make it direct marketing.
