Markup and margin calculator

Convert between markup and margin, and see the selling price and profit on any cost. Useful when a supplier talks margin and your quotes use markup.

The formulas

Markup % = profit ÷ cost × 100. Margin % = profit ÷ selling price × 100. To turn a margin into a markup: markup = margin ÷ (100 − margin) × 100. So a 20% margin needs a 25% markup, and a 50% margin needs a 100% markup.

Put the markup into the quote and VAT calculator to price a job.

Questions

Why does it matter?

If you add 20% to cost thinking that's a 20% margin, your real margin is 16.7%. Over a year, that gap adds up.

Should I mark up labour too?

That's a business decision. Many trades build profit into the hourly or day rate instead; the day-rate calculator helps.
