Price-change clause generator
Write a plain-English clause for your quotes that explains what happens if material prices change before you order. Pick your terms and copy the wording. It runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
Why the wording matters
For homeowners, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 lists, as a term that may be unfair, one that lets a trader increase the price without giving the consumer the right to cancel if the final price is too high compared with the price agreed (Schedule 2, paragraph 15, legislation.gov.uk). Written terms must also be transparent: plain, intelligible and legible (section 68). The CMA's unfair contract terms guidance explains how it applies these rules. The generator keeps the clause narrow: named materials, a trigger, evidence, no extra margin, and a way out for the customer.
Put the clause on the quote itself, not hidden in small print, and point it out when you send the quote. See payment terms for trades and how to write a quote that wins, or price the job with the quote and VAT calculator.
This is a starting point, not legal advice. For large contracts, ask a solicitor or use a standard form contract.
Questions
Can I put a price increase clause in a quote for a homeowner?
You can, but the Consumer Rights Act 2015 lists price increases without a right to cancel as potentially unfair. Give the customer a way out, keep it to named materials and show evidence.
Is a quote legally binding?
A quote accepted by the customer usually forms a contract at that price, which is why any change mechanism needs to be agreed upfront.
How long should a quote be valid?
Long enough for the customer to decide, short enough that material prices won't have moved much. Many trades use 30 days; state it clearly.
Is this legal advice?
No. It's plain-English wording based on the Consumer Rights Act 2015, checked 15 October 2026.
