Does Siri use ChatGPT?
Short answer
Partly. Siri runs on Apple's own models, but on Apple Intelligence devices you can switch on a ChatGPT extension. Siri can then pass some questions, documents or photos to ChatGPT, usually asking you first. You need an iPhone 15 Pro or later set to a supported language such as English. A ChatGPT account is optional.
How Siri and ChatGPT work together
Apple's own models handle most Siri requests, either on your iPhone or on Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers. When a question needs broad world knowledge or creative writing, Siri can offer to send it to ChatGPT. You can also ask directly, for example:
- "Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT to suggest a name for my dog grooming van."
- "Ask ChatGPT to summarise this document," with a PDF open in Files.
- "Ask ChatGPT what I can cook with this," with a photo open.
ChatGPT also powers some Writing Tools features, such as writing text from scratch, if the extension is on.
How to turn on the ChatGPT extension
- Update your iPhone to the latest iOS and make sure Apple Intelligence is on.
- Go to Settings, then Apple Intelligence and Siri, then ChatGPT (it may be listed under Extensions).
- Choose Set Up and follow the steps. You can use it without signing in, or sign in to your ChatGPT account.
- Leave Confirm Requests switched on if you want Siri to ask before sending anything to ChatGPT.
Apple's iPhone guide says the ChatGPT extension only works in regions where ChatGPT itself is available, which includes the UK. Usage limits may apply.
Signed in or not?
| Without a ChatGPT account | Signed in to ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free, or uses your paid plan's limits |
| History | Requests are not saved to a ChatGPT account or used for training | Requests appear in your ChatGPT history and follow your ChatGPT data settings |
| Best for | Occasional questions, more privacy | Heavier use, access to your plan's models |
Apple says your IP address is hidden from ChatGPT, though your general location is shared. Without an account, OpenAI must not store your requests unless the law requires it, and must not use them to train its models. Once you sign in, OpenAI's own privacy policy applies. What about Siri AI?
In iOS 27 Apple launched Siri AI in beta, a new, more conversational Siri that understands personal context across your messages, emails and photos and can take actions in apps. You join a waitlist from Settings, then Siri, then Try Siri AI (Beta). Apple says Siri AI is available in English in eligible regions, and is not available on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch in the EU. It is Apple's own Siri, not ChatGPT, though the ChatGPT extension still works alongside it. See is Apple Intelligence free?
Can I replace Siri with ChatGPT?
Not as the built in assistant. Apple does not let you swap Siri for another voice assistant. But you can get close:
- Action Button: on iPhone 15 Pro and later, set the Action Button to open ChatGPT's voice mode.
- Shortcuts: the ChatGPT app adds actions you can run by voice with a custom phrase.
- Back Tap: in Accessibility settings, set a double tap on the back of the phone to run a ChatGPT shortcut.
- Lock Screen and Control Centre: add ChatGPT controls for quick access.
Using it for work
The extension is handy for quick drafting on the go, such as a reply to a customer or a summary of a quote document. Keep confirmation on, and avoid sending documents with clients' personal details through a personal ChatGPT account. For business use, consider a ChatGPT Business account with clearer data terms. Common mistakes
- Expecting it on an older iPhone. Apple Intelligence needs iPhone 15 Pro or later.
- Turning off Confirm Requests and forgetting that photos and files may go to OpenAI.
- Assuming Siri AI is ChatGPT. They are separate.
- Signing in with a work ChatGPT account on a personal phone without checking company policy.
