GPT-6 in ChatGPT: what it means for UK small businesses
OpenAI made GPT-6 the model behind everyday ChatGPT chats on 7 October 2026, and it reached Free and Go accounts from the next day. If you run a trade or a small business, the short version is this: the chat you already use now answers with charts, tables, buttons and small working tools when they help, it starts answering sooner, and it is better at saying when it does not know. You do not need to change plan to get it. This guide covers what changed, what it means in practice, and where to be careful. Everything below was checked on OpenAI's own pages on 23 October 2026.
What is GPT-6 in ChatGPT?
GPT-6 is OpenAI's latest family of models. In the Chat part of ChatGPT it comes in two versions (OpenAI: GPT-6 and Intelligent UI for everyone):
| Your ChatGPT plan | Model used in Chat | UK price (UK App Store, checked 23 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-6 Luna | £0 |
| Go | GPT-6 Luna | £6.99 a month |
| Plus | GPT-6 Sol | £19.99 a month |
| Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol (Pro also keeps GPT-6 Astra for its Pro reasoning option) | See OpenAI's pricing page |
OpenAI says both Luna and Sol are tuned for everyday conversation. Sol is the stronger of the two, so paid plans still get better answers on harder jobs, but Free users now have the same new style of answer. The release only changes the Chat tab. OpenAI says the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex did not change with it (ChatGPT release notes).
What changed: Intelligent UI
The headline feature is what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. Instead of always replying in paragraphs, ChatGPT can now build the answer out of text, pictures, charts, forms, tappable buttons and small interactive tools, and it picks the format itself. OpenAI's own examples include a cooking timeline laid out next to a recipe, a savings calculator and a bill splitter built on request. When plain text is the clearest answer, it should still give you plain text.
For a small business, that matters in three places:
- Quick calculators. You can ask for a working tool in the chat: "Build me a calculator where I enter square metres, price per square metre and a waste percentage, and it shows materials and a total." You can change the inputs yourself instead of asking again.
- Side-by-side comparisons. Asking it to compare two vans, two card readers or two quotes from suppliers is more likely to come back as a table you can scan.
- Step-by-step plans. A job plan for a two-day kitchen fit, or a week of social posts, can come back as a checklist or timeline rather than a wall of text.
Intelligent UI works from the Instant setting up to Extra High reasoning. OpenAI says the Pro reasoning option still uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support it.
Faster answers and better searching
GPT-6 can start writing while it is still thinking or searching, then add to the answer without another prompt. OpenAI says that for questions needing a web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than the previous Instant model. That figure is OpenAI's own internal test, not ours. OpenAI also says GPT-6 makes better choices about when to look something up, and is better at telling you when it lacks the information or tools to answer.
Treat that last point as a bonus, not a guarantee. It can still be confidently wrong, especially on UK rules, prices and dates.
Other October changes worth knowing
A few other changes from the same weeks are useful for a small business:
- Locked chats (20 October). You can lock selected chats behind a 4-digit account PIN or Face ID, so they disappear from your history and search. Handy if a family member or apprentice borrows your phone. OpenAI is clear that this is not encryption, does not change how long chats are kept, and that resetting a forgotten PIN permanently deletes every locked chat (OpenAI: using locked chats). Step by step in how to lock ChatGPT chats.
- Custom GPTs are being retired (11 December). OpenAI plans to replace custom GPTs with plugins. Existing GPTs keep working until then, and creators can move them with Migrate to plugin. What to do is in are custom GPTs being retired?
- Audio uploads (6 October). On paid plans you can upload a recording and get a transcript, a summary or a follow-up email draft. Get permission before recording anyone.
- ChatGPT for Word (23 September). A Word add-in that drafts and tidies documents from a sidebar, on every plan including Free.
Some features you may read about are not available here yet. OpenAI's "dots", always-on agents, launched excluding the UK for Pro users. And OpenAI started showing ads to Free and Go users in the UK earlier this year; paid plans stay ad-free (ChatGPT release notes). Our answer on whether ChatGPT has ads has more.
What it means for a UK trade or small business
If you were on the fence about using ChatGPT at all, the free plan is now noticeably more capable. If you already pay for Plus, nothing about your bill changed, and you get the stronger Sol model. Our guide to free vs paid ChatGPT for small business goes through when paying is worth it, and Is ChatGPT free in the UK? covers the limits.
The practical gains are in admin you already do: pricing jobs, comparing options, planning weeks and writing to customers. The risks are the same as before, plus one new one: a nicely laid-out chart or calculator looks more trustworthy than a paragraph, even when the numbers underneath are wrong.
Five prompts to try with GPT-6
Build me a simple quote calculator. Inputs: area in square metres, my price per square metre, materials cost, waste percentage and VAT (on or off at 20%). Show a breakdown and a total. Use British spelling.
Compare these two supplier quotes side by side in a table: [paste both, with names and prices removed if private]. Show the differences in price, lead time and what is included, then list questions I should ask each supplier.
Turn this job into a day-by-day checklist I can tick off: [describe the job]. Include materials to order, who needs to be there and when to tell the customer about any noise or water shut-off.
I'm a [trade] in [town]. Make a 4-week plan for posts on my Google Business Profile and Facebook, as a table with date, idea and a 40-word draft. Don't invent offers or prices.
Here are my last 3 months of income and costs as a list: [paste]. Make a chart of income against costs by month and tell me which costs grew fastest. Don't give tax advice.

Limits and risks
- Check every number. A calculator ChatGPT builds is only as good as the formula it chose. Test it with a job you already know the answer to before you rely on it.
- Keep customer details out. Do not paste names, addresses or phone numbers. Use placeholders. Our answer on putting customer data into ChatGPT explains why.
- Locked does not mean secure. Locked chats hide conversations on screen. They are not a safe place for passwords or bank details.
- UK rules change. VAT, CIS and Making Tax Digital details need checking on GOV.UK, not taken from a chatbot.
- Free has limits. Free and Go use the lighter Luna model and have usage caps, and Free shows ads in the UK.

FAQ
What is GPT-6 in ChatGPT?
It is OpenAI's newest model family, used in the Chat tab of ChatGPT since 7 October 2026. Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna; Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol.
Is GPT-6 free?
Yes. Free ChatGPT accounts got GPT-6 Luna from 8 October 2026, with usage limits. Paid plans get the stronger GPT-6 Sol.
What is Intelligent UI in ChatGPT?
It lets ChatGPT answer with charts, tables, forms, buttons and small interactive tools, such as a calculator, as well as text. ChatGPT chooses the format based on your question.
Do I need to change my ChatGPT plan to get GPT-6?
No. It rolled out to every plan automatically. Plus is £19.99 a month and Go £6.99 a month on the UK App Store, checked 23 October 2026.
Can I trust a calculator ChatGPT builds?
Only after you test it. Run it on a job where you already know the right total, and check the formula before using it on a real quote.
How do I lock a chat in ChatGPT?
Open the chat's more options menu (the three dots) and choose Lock chat, then set a 4-digit PIN. If you reset a forgotten PIN, every locked chat is permanently deleted.
