Does ChatGPT have ads in the UK?
Short answer
Yes. OpenAI launched ads in ChatGPT in the UK in August 2026, after a US test began in February. Ads can appear on the Free and Go plans, below an answer and clearly labelled. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu have no ads. OpenAI says ads don't influence ChatGPT's answers and advertisers don't see your chats.

Prices checked 18 October 2026. The App Store lists these as in-app purchases without showing the billing period, so confirm on the payment screen before you subscribe. OpenAI doesn't show ads to accounts it identifies as under 18.
Ads can also appear when you use ChatGPT without logging in. OpenAI's help page says ads in logged-out use are suitable for all audiences, and mature-content ads are limited to eligible logged-in users.
How ads are chosen
OpenAI says ads are matched to the topic of your conversation and, with ad personalisation on, other signals from your ChatGPT use, including past chats and memory. You can manage this in Settings, then Ads controls.
From Ads controls you can:
- turn off ad personalisation (you'll still see ads based on your current chat)
- see why you were shown an ad
- hide or report an ad
- delete your ads data, which OpenAI says is removed within 30 days
Where ads don't appear
OpenAI says ads aren't shown:
- in Temporary Chats
- near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics
- to accounts it identifies as belonging to under-18s
It also says it doesn't allow political advertising in ChatGPT.
How to avoid ads
- Upgrade to Plus or Pro. See is ChatGPT Plus worth it?
- On Free, switch to the ad-free option, which comes with fewer messages and no image generation or deep research.
To switch on Free: open Settings, choose Ads controls, tap Change plan, then choose the option to reduce message limits. You can switch back the same way, or from the banner that appears when you hit a limit.
What advertisers see
OpenAI says advertisers don't get your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location or IP address. They see aggregated figures such as views and clicks. If you choose to message an advertiser through an ad, they see the messages you send them.
Can my business advertise in ChatGPT?
OpenAI runs an ads platform for advertisers, with availability by country. Treat it like any new ad channel: small budget, careful tracking.
Worked example: a sole trader using the free plan at work
Say you're a mobile hairdresser in Bolton using ChatGPT Free to draft price lists and social posts.
- Expect an ad under some answers. It'll be labelled and separate from the reply.
- Turn off personalisation if you'd rather ads weren't based on your past chats.
- Use Temporary Chat for one-off questions. OpenAI says Temporary Chats don't show ads.
- Decide if ads bother you. If they do, compare ad-free Free (fewer messages) with Go or Plus.
- Don't click an ad thinking it's ChatGPT's advice. OpenAI says ads are paid placements, not recommendations.
Common mistakes
- Treating an ad as part of the answer. It's a paid placement.
- Assuming Go is ad-free. It isn't; Plus and Pro are.
- Thinking personalisation off means no ads. You'll still see ads based on your current chat.
