Free vs paid ChatGPT for small businesses (UK)

Most sole traders can get useful work out of ChatGPT's free plan: draft emails, tidy quotes, turn job notes into a scope of work. Paid plans unlock higher limits and extra features. This page is a practical split for UK small businesses, not a review of every OpenAI product.

What we know about pricing

From our ChatGPT tool page (checked 14 October 2026): a free plan is available, and paid plans (Go, Plus, Business, Enterprise) are priced per user per month. OpenAI changes amounts, so treat any figure you see in an old blog as stale and check chatgpt.com/pricing before you buy.

We do not invent a Plus or Business price here. If you need a number for a budget, open the pricing page and copy the current amount into the AI tool break-even calculator.

When the free plan is enough

  • A few drafts a day: emails, texts, Facebook posts, quote follow-ups.
  • You paste your own notes and edit the output carefully.
  • You're happy to wait when the service is busy.
  • You don't need to share a workspace with staff.

Prompt packs that work well on free or paid: small business admin, tradespeople, and the trade-specific sets linked from each /for hub.

When a paid plan is worth checking

  • You hit usage limits in normal working hours.
  • You want faster responses during busy periods.
  • Several people in the business need the same assistant with shared instructions.
  • You're feeding it longer documents (policies, price lists, method statements) every day.

Still compare with Claude and Gemini: Claude's free and Pro prices are listed on our tools page; Gemini Notebook is free with a Google account for many research tasks.

Practical rules for either plan

  • Don't paste customer addresses, health details or payroll data unless you must.
  • Check every legal or tax claim against GOV.UK, not the chat.
  • Keep British spelling and your own prices; the model will invent both if you let it.
  • Save good prompts in a note so you're not starting from scratch each time.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT free for business use?

There is a free plan. Whether it covers your volume is a usage question. Paid plans exist for higher limits and team features; see OpenAI's pricing page.

Should a sole trader pay for Plus?

Only if the free plan's limits or speed are blocking real work. Run your monthly fee through the break-even calculator against hours saved.

Can I use ChatGPT for invoices and tax?

Use it to draft wording, not to invent figures. For tax maths use our self-employed tax calculator and GOV.UK.
