Which AI tools can I use for HR?

Last checked: 18 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Small businesses can use general AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Claude for HR writing: job adverts, interview questions, policies, contracts and letters. HR software like BrightHR, Breathe and Sage HR adds AI features too. Be careful with AI that screens or scores candidates, because UK GDPR and the Equality Act still apply.

Good uses with low risk

  • Drafting job adverts in plain English, then checking for biased wording.
  • Writing interview questions linked to the job description.
  • First drafts of policies, such as an AI policy, holiday or sickness policy.
  • Template letters for onboarding, probation and reference requests.
  • Summarising long ACAS or GOV.UK guidance for you.

Have a person check anything legal. ACAS has free templates and a helpline.

Higher risk: AI in recruitment

The ICO audited AI recruitment tools in 2024 and found problems: some filtered out candidates by protected characteristics, guessed gender or ethnicity from names, or collected more data than needed. Its recommendations for employers include:

  • Do a data protection impact assessment before you use AI to screen people.
  • Tell candidates how AI is used and how to challenge a decision.
  • Check the tool for fairness and bias, and keep a person involved in decisions.
  • Get clear contract terms from the supplier on who controls the data.

Rejecting someone because of a biased algorithm can still be discrimination under the Equality Act 2010.

Related questions

How is AI used in recruitment in the UK?

Mainly to write job adverts, sift CVs, schedule interviews and run chatbots that answer candidate questions. Larger employers also use video and game-based assessments, which carry more risk.

Do employers check CVs for AI?

Some do, but AI detectors are unreliable and can wrongly flag genuine writing. See are AI detectors accurate?

Can I put staff data into ChatGPT?

Not on a free personal account. Use a business plan with training off, and share only what is needed. See can I put customer data into ChatGPT?
