Does Copilot work in OneNote and Visio?

Short answer

Copilot works in OneNote if your account has an M365 Copilot (Basic) or M365 Copilot (Premium) label. It can summarise notes, make to-do lists and draft plans from a page. Visio is different: Microsoft's Copilot service description doesn't list Visio among the apps with Copilot built in, so use Copilot Chat alongside it instead.

Copilot in OneNote

Microsoft suggests prompts such as:

"Summarise the notes on this page as bullet points in date order."
"Draft a to-do list from my notes, prioritised by due date."
"Draft a project plan using the specs on this page."

To check your label, sign in at copilot.cloud.microsoft with your work or school account. Microsoft says a label of Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic) or M365 Copilot (Premium) appears under your name. Copilot Chat (Basic) doesn't include Copilot in OneNote.

On personal plans, Microsoft says AI features use your plan's AI allowance, and Copilot is only for the subscription owner, not shared with others on a Family plan. Microsoft also says Copilot won't be available in OneNote if Windows Information Protection is turned on for your device.

Basic versus Premium

Microsoft's service description lists Copilot Chat in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for both Basic and Premium users. "Edit with Copilot" in those apps needs a full Microsoft 365 Copilot licence (Premium).

Visio

Microsoft doesn't list Visio among its Copilot-integrated apps (checked 18 October 2026). You can describe a process to Copilot Chat or ChatGPT and ask for the steps or a text outline, then draw it in Visio.

Microsoft says the Visio web app is included in several business plans, including Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium, so you may already have Visio for basic flowcharts without buying anything extra.

Worked example: site notes to a job plan

Say you're an electrician in Cardiff and you keep survey notes in OneNote, one page per job. After a rewire survey you open the page and ask Copilot: "Draft a to-do list from these notes, grouped by first fix and second fix, and list any materials mentioned." You check it against what you saw on site and move it into your job app.

For the customer pack, you want a simple flowchart of how the job will run. Copilot isn't in Visio, so you ask Copilot Chat for a numbered list of the stages, then build the diagram in Visio for the web. The technical design and any calculations stay with you.

If you can't see Copilot in OneNote

Microsoft's troubleshooting steps include:

Look for the Copilot button on the Home tab of the ribbon.
Update your apps, then go to File, Account, Update License, and restart.
Business users: Copilot features aren't available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. Ask whoever manages your IT to move you to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel.
Check File, Account, Account Privacy, Manage Settings, and make sure "Experiences that analyze your content" and "All connected experiences" are on.

Common mistakes

Expecting it on a Mac with a personal plan. Personal subscriptions get Copilot in OneNote for Windows only.
Using the old OneNote for Windows 10 app. Microsoft calls it the legacy version and points to the current OneNote app.
Hunting for Copilot in Visio. It isn't there. Use Copilot Chat for the words, Visio for the drawing.
Trusting summaries blindly. Check any summary of measurements, prices or dates against the original page.
