What is an AI employee?

Last checked: 18 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

An "AI employee" is a marketing term for AI software that handles one set of tasks, such as answering calls, replying to enquiries or chasing invoices. It is not a person in law. You do not employ it, pay it wages or owe it employment rights, but you remain responsible for everything it says and does.

What AI employees actually are

Most products sold as AI employees are AI agents with a name, a voice and a set job. Common examples:

  • AI receptionist: answers the phone, takes messages and books jobs. See what is an AI receptionist?
  • AI sales assistant: replies to website and social media enquiries.
  • AI bookkeeper: sorts receipts and suggests categories in your accounts.
  • AI admin assistant: drafts emails, quotes and reminders for you to approve.

What to check before you buy

  • What it can do without asking. Can it send emails, take payments or make promises? Start with approval required.
  • Who it talks to. If it calls or messages customers, PECR and UK GDPR apply. See is cold calling legal?
  • Where your data goes. Ask where it is stored and whether it trains the vendor's models.
  • The real price. Many charge per minute, per conversation or per seat on top of a monthly fee.
  • Exit terms. Can you export your data and cancel monthly?

Does it replace staff?

It can take on repetitive admin and out-of-hours enquiries. It still makes mistakes and cannot use judgement the way an experienced person can. If changes affect existing staff, normal UK employment law on consultation and redundancy still applies. See will AI take jobs in the UK?
