Will AI take jobs, or create them?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Both. AI is already taking over some tasks, especially routine office and writing work, and it creates new jobs and makes others more productive. The IMF estimated in January 2024 that about 60% of jobs in advanced economies are exposed to AI, with roughly half of those likely to benefit rather than shrink. Hands-on trades are among the least exposed.

Most and least exposed

More exposedLess exposed
Admin, data entry, customer servicePlumbers, electricians, builders, roofers
Bookkeeping and payroll processingHairdressers, beauty and care work
Copywriting and translationMechanics and hands-on repair
Some legal and finance support rolesJobs with physical, unpredictable work

The Department for Education's 2023 report on AI and UK jobs found professional office roles more exposed than manual and trade roles.

For a small business owner

The bigger risk is competitors using AI to answer faster, quote quicker and market better. Use it for admin so you spend more time on paid work. See how to use AI in a small business.

Related questions

Does AI create jobs?

Yes, in building, checking and running AI systems, and indirectly when businesses grow. How the balance plays out isn't yet clear.

Will AI replace accountants?

It's changing the work more than removing it. See will AI replace accountants?

Is dentistry safe from AI?

Largely, yes. Dentistry is hands-on work regulated by the General Dental Council, so AI is more likely to help than replace. Expect it in X-ray analysis, note-taking and appointment booking. Practice admin roles may change more than clinical ones.
