Short answer

Google says Gemini in Gmail doesn't use your email content to train Gemini or other AI models, and doesn't store your prompts or the output without your permission. Those protections cover personal and Workspace accounts. You can turn Gemini off by switching off smart features in Gmail settings, but that also removes features like Smart Compose and inbox categories.

How to turn off Gemini in Gmail

Open Gmail on a computer, then Settings, then See all settings.
On the General tab, untick "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet".
Open Manage Workspace smart feature settings and turn off smart features in Google Workspace and in other Google products.
Save changes.

Workspace admins can switch Gemini off for the whole organisation.

Is it safe for business email?

For most businesses, yes, with the usual care: AI summaries can miss details, and drafts can sound confident but be wrong. Read before you send. If you share Workspace data with the separate Gemini app or Search, Google says different terms apply and it may be used for training.
