Can AI read my WhatsApp messages?
Short answer
No, not unless you share them. WhatsApp says your personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI can only read messages you send to it, mention it in or choose to share with it. The bigger risk is people exporting or pasting WhatsApp chats into other AI tools, which takes those messages outside WhatsApp's encryption.
How Meta AI works in WhatsApp
- You can chat with Meta AI directly, or mention @Meta AI in a group. Only those messages are shared with Meta.
- For features like message summaries, WhatsApp uses Private Processing, which it says is designed so that Meta and WhatsApp cannot read the messages. Features vary by country.
- Advanced Chat Privacy is a chat setting that stops others exporting the chat, saving media automatically or using messages with AI features.
Pasting chats into ChatGPT or other tools
People export WhatsApp chats into ChatGPT to summarise a group or draft a reply. That sends everyone's messages to another company.
