Does Gemini use my data for training?
Short answer
Yes, if Keep activity is on. Google says it uses your Gemini activity to improve its services, including training AI models, and that human reviewers read some chats. Turn off Keep activity and future chats aren't used for training unless you send feedback, though Google still keeps them for 72 hours. Work and school accounts follow different terms.
How to turn it off
Open Gemini Apps activity and turn off Keep activity. Google says:
- Future chats won't appear in your activity or train its models, unless you send feedback.
- Chats are still kept with your account for 72 hours to respond to you and for safety.
- Temporary chats are never used to train Google's models.
Human review
Google's privacy hub says a subset of chats is read by trained reviewers, including service providers. Reviewed chats are disconnected from your account and kept for up to three years, even if you delete your activity. Google's advice: don't enter anything confidential you wouldn't want a reviewer to see.
Retention
With Keep activity on, Gemini auto-deletes your activity after 18 months by default; you can choose 3 or 36 months, or keep it. Files you add as sources to a notebook aren't used directly to train the models, Google says.
For a UK business
If you use Google Workspace for business email, use Gemini through that account: Google says its business editions handle data under separate Workspace terms. Keep customer details out of a personal Gemini account. See is Google Gemini free? for the plans.
