How do I use the AI image generator in Canva?
Short answer
In Canva, open Canva AI from the home page or editor, choose to create an image, describe what you want and pick a style. You can also find image generators in the Apps panel of the editor. Canva Free includes a small monthly AI allowance that resets on the first of each month, and paid plans include more.
Step by step
- Open Canva and start a design, such as an Instagram post.
- Select Canva AI, or open Apps in the editor and search for an image generator.
- Describe the image: subject, setting, style and mood. For example: "Clean modern kitchen after a deep clean, bright daylight, photo style, no people."
- Pick the result you like and add it to your design.
- Add your text, logo and brand colours.
Free plan limits

Prompt tips
- Say what you do not want, such as "no text" or "no people".
- Ask for a style that matches your brand: photo, flat illustration or watercolour.
- Generate a few options and pick the most believable.
Can I use them commercially?
