How do AI chatbots and AI tools work?
Short answer
An AI chatbot such as ChatGPT runs on a large language model, trained on huge amounts of text to predict which words are likely to come next. When you type a question, it writes an answer one piece at a time. Many can also search the web, read files and use tools, but they still don't truly "know" facts.
In four steps
- Training: the model learns patterns from vast amounts of text, then is tuned with human feedback to be helpful and safer.
- Your prompt: your message, plus earlier chat and any files, is split into small pieces called tokens.
- Generating: the model predicts the most likely next token, again and again, to build its reply.
- Tools: many chatbots can search the web, run code or use apps to get fresher or more accurate results.
Why they make mistakes
Because they predict plausible text, they can produce confident answers that are wrong, called hallucinations. Searching the web and citing sources helps, but you still need to check. See what is an AI hallucination?
Why the date matters
A model only knows what was in its training data unless it searches the web. See does ChatGPT have up-to-date information?
