Does AI save your data?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Usually, yes. Most AI chatbots save your conversations in your history, and many consumer plans can use them to improve their models unless you switch that off. Business plans generally don't train on your data by default. Assume anything you type could be stored, and keep customer and confidential details out of personal accounts.

Why do AI tools need data?

To answer, a tool has to process what you send. Saving history lets you return to chats and lets the tool remember preferences. Companies also use some conversations to improve models and spot misuse, which is why training settings matter.

How to limit what's kept

  1. Turn off model training in each tool's settings.
  2. Use temporary or incognito chats for one-off questions.
  3. Delete old chats you don't need. See how to delete ChatGPT data.
  4. Use a business plan with a data processing agreement for customer data.
