Best AI image generators for UK small businesses (2026)
For most UK small businesses, the best AI image generator is the one inside the design tool you already use: Canva's free plan covers social posts, flyers and menu boards, with AI image generation built in. If you need words to appear correctly inside an image (a sign, a poster headline, a logo idea), Ideogram is the strongest option with a free plan. For the most striking artwork, Midjourney leads, but it has no free plan. Below we compare seven tools on price, free allowance, commercial use and the UK rules that matter when you put AI images in front of customers.
Prices checked on each provider's own page; dates are shown. Updated 18 October 2026. Part of our best AI tools for small business UK guide.

How we chose
We looked at what a small business actually makes: social posts, flyers, menu boards, website banners, product backgrounds and the odd logo idea. For each tool we checked the price and free allowance on the provider's own page, whether it says you can use images commercially, whether it handles text inside images, and how quickly a non-designer gets a usable result. We did not accept payment for placement, and none of the links below are affiliate links.
The tools in detail
Canva: best free choice for everyday marketing
Canva is a design tool first and an image generator second, which is exactly why it suits most small businesses. You can generate a background or illustration, then drop it straight into a template sized for Instagram, a Facebook cover, an A5 flyer or a printed menu, add your logo and colours, and download or schedule it.
The free plan includes 1.6 million+ templates, 5 GB of storage, one Brand Kit with three colours and up to 200 standard AI uses or 20 premium AI uses a month. Canva says its newest AI features are on paid plans only. For a café, salon or trades business making a few posts a week, the free plan is usually enough. Pro makes sense when you want the full brand kit, background remover and resizing across formats.
- Good: templates for every format; AI images go straight into a finished design; free plan is generous.
- Watch: the most advanced AI features need a paid plan; generated images are less striking than Midjourney's.
- Price: Free. Pro £100 a year; Business £180 a year per person. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
Ideogram: best for posters, signs and text in images
Most image generators still struggle to spell. Ideogram is built to put readable words into an image, which matters for a poster headline, an event flyer, a shop-window sign mock-up or early logo ideas. You type the wording in quotes and pick a style.
There is a free plan. Plus costs $20 a month paying monthly or $15 a month billed annually ($180), Pro is $60 or $42 billed annually, and a Team plan is $30 per user a month or $20 billed annually. Pay-as-you-go credits cost 1 cent each. Prices are in US dollars and exclude tax. Ideogram says it doesn't claim ownership of your images and you can use them commercially.
- Good: reliable text in images; free plan; clear statement on commercial use.
- Watch: US-dollar pricing; check every word before printing, because it still makes mistakes.
- Price: Free. Plus $20 a month or $15 billed annually. Pro $60 or $42 billed annually. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
Midjourney: best image quality, if you will pay
Midjourney produces the most polished, photographic or artistic images of the tools here, which is why designers use it for moodboards and hero images. For a small business it suits a website banner, a menu cover or a seasonal campaign where the picture needs to stop people scrolling.
There is no free plan. Basic is $10 a month, or $96 a year ($8 a month). Standard is $30, or $288 a year. Pro is $60 and Mega $120, with yearly discounts. Annual plans are paid up front. It takes a little practice to get consistent results, so budget an hour to learn the prompts.
- Good: best-looking results; strong for photographic and artistic styles.
- Watch: no free plan; takes practice; less useful for images with words in them.
- Price: Basic $10 a month or $96 a year. Standard $30 or $288 a year. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
Adobe Express: best if you already use Adobe
Adobe Express is Adobe's quick-design app, with Firefly image generation built in. It is a close alternative to Canva: templates, a background remover, resizing, and generated images you can place in a design. If you or your designer already work in Photoshop or Illustrator, it keeps your brand files in one place.
The free plan has 100,000+ templates and limited generative AI credits. Premium is US$9.99 a month, and Firefly Pro is US$19.99 a month. The UK pricing page lists prices in US dollars.
- Good: familiar if you use Adobe; good templates; generative fill for editing photos.
- Watch: fewer templates than Canva; US-dollar prices on the UK page.
- Price: Free. Premium US$9.99 a month. Firefly Pro US$19.99 a month. Checked 14 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
Leonardo.Ai: cheapest way to try lots of styles
Leonardo gives you a daily free allowance and a wide choice of models and styles, which makes it a good playground for product backgrounds, illustrations and social graphics before you commit to anything.
The free plan gives 150 tokens a day. Essential is $12 a month paying monthly or $10 billed yearly, Premium $30 or $24, and Ultimate $60 or $48. Team plans start at $72 a month for 3 seats. Prices are in US dollars and exclude tax, with VAT added at checkout where it applies.
- Good: daily free tokens; many styles; low entry price.
- Watch: the number of options can slow beginners down; US-dollar pricing.
- Price: Free (150 tokens a day). Essential $12 a month or $10 billed yearly. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
ChatGPT: best for images while you write
If you already use ChatGPT to draft a post or a flyer, asking it for an image in the same chat is the quickest route. It is good at following detailed instructions, such as a layout or a mood, and you can ask for changes in plain English.
OpenAI's pricing page lists limited image creation on the free plan and more on Go and Plus. Paid plans are priced per user per month, and Business plans start at 2 users. Nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise.
- Good: no new tool to learn; edits by conversation.
- Watch: tight limits on the free plan; images still need checking for odd details.
- Price: Free with limits. Go, Plus and Business are per user per month; see the pricing page for the current amount. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
Gemini: best for Google users
Gemini makes images from a chat with a Google Account, and fits naturally if your business runs on Gmail, Google Drive and Google Workspace. It is handy for quick concept images and for editing a photo you upload.
Gemini is free with a Google Account. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month, Google AI Pro $19.99 a month and Ultra from $99.99 a month. Our check showed US-dollar prices; Google may show pounds to UK visitors.
- Good: free to start; works with Google Workspace.
- Watch: fewer design controls than Canva or Adobe Express.
- Price: Free. Google AI Plus $4.99 a month; Google AI Pro $19.99 a month. Checked 17 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).
What a year of images costs
| Need | Cheapest route | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|
| 10 social posts a month, templates matter | Canva free plan | £0 |
| Full brand kit and resizing for every format | Canva Pro | £100 |
| Posters and signs with readable wording | Ideogram Plus billed annually | $180 |
| A handful of standout campaign images | Midjourney Basic billed yearly | $96 |
| Experimenting with many styles | Leonardo Essential billed yearly | $120 |
Dollar prices are converted by your card provider on the day, and may have VAT added at checkout. If you're VAT-registered, enter your VAT number: for business-to-business services from overseas suppliers, UK VAT is usually handled under the reverse charge (GOV.UK).
UK rules for AI images in your marketing
- Don't show work you didn't do. The advertising rules on misleading claims apply whatever made the picture (CAP Code). An AI image of a kitchen you didn't fit, a cake you didn't bake or a haircut you didn't give can mislead customers. Use AI for backgrounds, illustrations and concepts; use your own photos for your work.
- Copyright is less clear than for photos. UK law gives a computer-generated work to "the person by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken" (CDPA 1988, s.9(3)), and the government has consulted on changes to copyright and AI (GOV.UK). Read each tool's terms on commercial use before you print thousands of flyers.
- Leave real people and brands out. Don't generate images of real customers, celebrities or other companies' logos and products.
- Check every detail. Hands, signage, food and text are where AI images go wrong. Zoom in before you post.
Which should you pick?
- You post a few times a week and want it to look tidy: start with Canva's free plan.
- You need words on the image: Ideogram.
- You want one or two standout images for a campaign or website: a month of Midjourney Basic.
- You use Adobe already: Adobe Express.
- You just need a quick picture while writing: ChatGPT or Gemini.
A prompt that works for small businesses
Be specific about the use, the size and what must not appear. For example:
Create a square image for an Instagram post for a family-run bakery in a UK market town. Warm morning light, a wooden counter with fresh sourdough loaves and a chalkboard in the background with no writing on it. Natural, realistic style. No people, no logos, no text.
Then add your own wording in Canva or Adobe Express, where you can control the font and spelling. More prompts: prompt library and social media post generator.
Questions
What is the best free AI image generator in the UK?
For most small businesses, Canva's free plan, because the images go straight into templates for social posts, flyers and menus. Ideogram and Leonardo.Ai also have free plans; Ideogram is better when you need text in the image.
Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Usually yes, but it depends on each tool's terms. Ideogram, for example, says it doesn't claim ownership and you can use images commercially. UK law on who owns computer-generated works is set out in section 9(3) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, and the government has consulted on changes, so check the terms before large print runs.
Is Midjourney worth paying for a small business?
Only if image quality really matters, such as for a website hero image or a campaign. Basic is $10 a month, so you can pay for one month, make what you need and cancel.
Can AI make a logo for my business?
AI tools are useful for logo ideas, and Ideogram handles lettering best. For the final logo, many businesses pay a designer to redraw the idea so it works at every size and so the ownership is clear.
Can I use AI images instead of photos of my work?
Not to show work you have done. Advertising rules on misleading claims apply whatever made the image. Use AI for backgrounds and illustrations, and your own photos for your work.
Do I pay VAT on AI image tools priced in dollars?
Some providers add VAT at checkout. If you are VAT-registered, enter your VAT number; for services bought from overseas businesses, UK VAT is usually accounted for under the reverse charge (HMRC Notice 741A).
