How we chose

A small business usually posts to two to four places: a Facebook page, Instagram, Google Business Profile and perhaps LinkedIn or TikTok. We compared what each scheduler costs for that set-up, how many posts the free plan allows, which channels it can publish to automatically (rather than sending you a reminder), the AI help for writing captions, and whether a second person can help. Prices and features come from each provider's own page.

The tools in detail

Buffer: best overall for a small business

Buffer is simple: connect your channels, write or paste a post, and it goes out at the time you choose. Its AI Assistant helps rewrite and repurpose posts, and the free plan includes it. Crucially for local businesses, Buffer publishes automatically to Google Business Profiles, so your Google listing stays active alongside Facebook and Instagram.

The free plan covers 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time (slots refill as posts go out), 100 ideas and 1 user; Buffer's FAQ refers to a three-channel limit on the free plan. Essentials is $5 a month per channel ($60 a year), with unlimited scheduled posts and analytics. Team is $10 a month per channel and adds unlimited users and approvals. There is a 14-day free trial. Buffer applies UK VAT for consumers; businesses can enter a VAT number to use the reverse charge. Nonprofits get 50% off.

  • Good: free plan; publishes to Google Business Profile; pay only for the channels you use.
  • Watch: Instagram personal profiles get reminders, not automatic posting; costs rise per channel.
  • Price: Free. Essentials $5 a channel a month billed yearly; Team $10. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

Meta Business Suite: best free choice for Facebook and Instagram only

If your social media is a Facebook page and an Instagram business account, Meta's own Business Suite lets you plan and schedule posts and stories for both, reply to messages and comments in one inbox, and see basic insights, without paying anyone.

It is free, but it only covers Meta's own apps, so you will still post to Google Business Profile and LinkedIn separately.

  • Good: free; made by Meta, so features arrive there first.
  • Watch: Facebook and Instagram only; less helpful for planning across channels.
  • Price: Free. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

Metricool: best free analytics

Metricool combines a planner with analytics and competitor tracking. Its free plan is free forever for one brand, with one profile per social network, content planning, automatic publishing and an inbox for messages. Each brand corresponds to one Google Business Profile location.

Paid plans add more brands, longer data history and team features; check the current prices on its pricing page, which shows euros or US dollars.

  • Good: free forever plan; strong analytics; Google Business Profile support.
  • Watch: the interface has a lot in it; multi-location businesses need a brand per location.
  • Price: Free for 1 brand. Paid plans: see the pricing page. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

Later: best for Instagram and TikTok visuals

Later started as a visual Instagram planner and still shines there: drag-and-drop calendar, best times to post, link in bio and media collection. It suits salons, cafés, shops and makers whose social media is mostly photos and Reels.

Growth is $37.50 a month billed yearly for 2 social sets (16 profiles), 2 users, 180 posts per profile a month and 50 AI credits. Annual plans save 25% over monthly. Extra users are $5 each. There is a 14-day free trial, and qualifying nonprofits get 50% off the annual Growth plan. Prices are in US dollars with taxes extra.

  • Good: excellent visual planning; link in bio included.
  • Watch: no free plan; Starter limits you to 1 user and 30 posts per profile a month.
  • Price: Growth $37.50 a month billed yearly. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

Hootsuite: best for larger teams

Hootsuite is a full social media management platform: scheduling, a shared inbox, listening, competitor benchmarking and approval workflows. It is built for businesses with a marketing team or an agency managing several brands.

Hootsuite says paid plans start at $99 for Standard (up to 10 social accounts), $199 for Professional and up to $399 for Advanced, per user a month billed annually, excluding taxes. There is a 14-day free trial with no card needed, and nonprofit discounts on some plans.

  • Good: powerful listening and reporting; team approvals.
  • Watch: far more than a sole trader or small shop needs; priced per user.
  • Price: Standard from $99 per user a month billed annually. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

Canva: best if design is the hard part

Many small businesses find making the post harder than scheduling it. Canva lets you design posts from templates and generate images with AI, and Buffer, Later and others import designs from Canva directly.

The free plan is generous. Pro is £100 a year and Business £180 a year per person in the UK. See our best AI image generators for the design side.

  • Good: design and AI images in one place; works with most schedulers.
  • Watch: check the current scheduling features on Canva's plans before relying on it as your only scheduler.
  • Price: Free. Pro £100 a year. Checked 18 Oct 2026 (provider's pricing page).

UK rules for business social media

  • Label paid partnerships. If you pay or gift an influencer, or post on behalf of a brand that pays you, the post must be obviously identifiable as an ad, for example with "#ad" (ASA influencer guide).
  • Claims must be true. Posts are advertising when they promote your business, so the CAP Code applies: you must be able to back up claims like "best", "cheapest" or "guaranteed" (CAP Code).
  • Get permission for customer photos. A photo of an identifiable customer is personal data (ICO). Ask before posting, and remove it if they change their mind.
  • No fake reviews or testimonials. Don't post made-up praise or hide incentives for reviews (GOV.UK).

Which should you pick?

  • You post to Facebook, Instagram and Google: Buffer, free to start.
  • Only Facebook and Instagram: Meta Business Suite.
  • You want analytics and competitor tracking for free: Metricool.
  • Your business is visual and Instagram-led: Later.
  • You have a marketing team or agency: Hootsuite.

A month of posts in 30 minutes

Ask ChatGPT or Claude:

Plan 12 social media posts for [business] in [town] for [month]. Mix: 4 recent jobs or products (I will add photos), 3 tips for customers, 2 behind-the-scenes, 2 local or seasonal, 1 offer. Write a caption under 60 words for each, British English, no hashtags in the text, then suggest 3 relevant hashtags.

Paste them into your scheduler and add your own photos. More help: social post generator and AI social media posts for tradesmen.

Questions

What is the best free social media scheduler in the UK?

Buffer for most small businesses: the free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, including Google Business Profile. Meta Business Suite is free for Facebook and Instagram only, and Metricool has a free plan for one brand.

Can I schedule Google Business Profile posts?

Yes. Buffer publishes automatically to Google Business Profiles, and Metricool supports one Google Business Profile per brand. You can also post directly in your Google Business Profile.

Is Hootsuite worth it for a small business?

Usually not for a sole trader or small shop. Hootsuite says paid plans start at $99 per user a month billed annually. It earns its price for teams that need listening, approvals and detailed reports.

Can AI write my social media posts?

Yes. Buffer and Later include AI caption tools, and ChatGPT or Claude can plan a month of posts. Add your own photos and check every claim.

Do I need to label posts as ads?

If you pay or gift an influencer, or you are paid to promote something, the post must be obviously identifiable as an ad. The ASA's influencer guide explains how.

How often should a small business post?

There is no fixed rule. A steady routine you can keep up, such as two or three posts a week plus a weekly Google Business Profile update, usually beats bursts of activity.
