What is MCP in AI?
Short answer
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to other apps and data, such as your email, files, calendar or accounting software. Anthropic launched it in November 2024 and gave it to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025. Claude, ChatGPT and many other tools now support it.
How MCP works, simply
Think of MCP as a universal plug. A company builds one "MCP server" for its app, and any AI assistant that supports MCP can use it. Before MCP, each AI tool needed its own custom integration for every app.
In practice you see MCP as "connectors" or "apps" inside an AI assistant. When you connect Gmail, Google Drive, Notion or HubSpot to Claude or ChatGPT, MCP is often what sits underneath.
What it means for a small business
- More useful AI. The assistant can look up a customer, read a file or check your diary instead of you copying and pasting.
- More access to manage. Every connector you add gives the AI access to that data. Only connect what you need.
- Actions, not just answers. Some MCP servers let the AI create, edit or send things. Keep approval switched on for anything that leaves your business. See can AI agents be trusted?
Is MCP safe?
The standard itself is open and widely used. The risk is in the servers you connect. Use official connectors from the app's maker or your AI provider, avoid unknown servers from the internet and watch for prompt injection, where text in an email or web page tries to trick the AI into doing something.
Related questions
Do I need to code to use MCP?
No. Most people use ready-made connectors inside Claude or ChatGPT. Developers build their own MCP servers.
Who owns MCP?
It is an open project under the Agentic AI Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation, alongside OpenAI's AGENTS.md and Block's goose.
Is MCP the same as an API?
No. MCP sits on top of a service's API and gives AI assistants a standard way to use it.
