What Alexa+ costs in the UK

Amazon says Alexa+ will not automatically start charging non-Prime customers when Early Access ends, but check the emails Amazon sends you so you know what happens next. For most households, if you already pay for Prime, Alexa+ costs nothing extra. If you do not, £19.99 a month is more than Prime itself, so Amazon is clearly nudging people towards Prime.

How to get Alexa+

1. Check you have a personal Amazon account registered in the UK. Business and household shared accounts may not qualify.
2. If you buy a new eligible Echo device, Alexa+ should be available as soon as you set it up.
3. If you already own an eligible Echo, sign up at amazon.co.uk/newalexa and wait for an invite by email or a notification on the device.
4. Once you are in, you can also use Alexa+ in the Alexa app on your phone and in a web browser.
5. Set your device language to English. At UK launch Alexa+ only works in English.

Older Echo models may stay on the classic Alexa. Amazon's product pages say which devices support Alexa+.

What Alexa+ can do

Alexa+ is more conversational than the old Alexa. You can talk to it naturally, ask follow up questions and give several instructions at once. Amazon highlights:

• Booking restaurants and managing your calendar.
• Shopping and tracking orders on Amazon.
• Controlling smart home devices with plain English, such as "turn the heating down and switch off the downstairs lights".
• Reviewing Ring camera footage and home security.
• Finding music and programmes from a vague description.
• Remembering family preferences, such as dietary needs, when you tell it.

Is it useful for a small business?

Alexa+ is a consumer product tied to a personal account, so it is not designed for business phone lines or customer service. A sole trader might use it at home for reminders, timers and a shopping list of supplies, but anything involving customer details belongs in proper business software. Privacy: what to check

Alexa+ processes voice requests in Amazon's cloud. Before you switch it on:

• Open the Alexa Privacy dashboard in the Alexa app to review and delete voice recordings.
• Decide whether you want Alexa+ to remember personal details, and check what it has stored.
• Be careful connecting your email, calendar or camera footage if other people live with you.
• Mute the microphone when you discuss anything sensitive, such as banking or health.

Common mistakes

• Expecting every Echo to upgrade. Older devices may not support Alexa+.
• Signing up on a shared or business Amazon account that is not eligible.
• Forgetting to check whether you will be charged when Early Access ends if you are not in Prime.
• Connecting a family calendar without telling the rest of the household.
