How do I use Copilot in Word?
Short answer
Open a document in Word and select the Copilot button on the Home tab, or the Copilot icon beside a blank line. Ask it to draft, rewrite, summarise or answer questions about the document. Copilot in Word comes with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium for the account owner, and with business plans that include Copilot.

What to ask Copilot in Word
- Draft: "Write a one-page method statement for replacing a consumer unit, using the notes below."
- Rewrite: select text, then ask it to make it shorter, more formal or clearer.
- Summarise: "Summarise this contract in five bullet points and list any deadlines."
- Ask: "What does this document say about payment terms?"
Check every fact and figure. Copilot drafts quickly but can get details wrong.
Tips
- Save documents to OneDrive, as some features need cloud files.
- Point it at a file with a slash and the file name to use it as a source.
- Use Word's built-in Editor for spelling and grammar, which works without AI credits.
