How can photographers use AI?
Short answer
UK photographers can use AI to cull and edit faster, remove distractions, write client emails and booking questionnaires, draft captions and blog posts, and reply to enquiries. ChatGPT is good for words; editing apps have AI built in. Be open with clients about heavy AI edits, and check your contract covers how you use AI.
Where AI helps
- Culling and editing: many editing apps now include AI culling, masking and noise reduction. They speed up a wedding or event edit but still need your eye.
- Retouching: removing distractions and fixing skies. Agree with clients what is acceptable, especially for documentary or commercial work.
- Client communication: enquiry replies, booking questionnaires, shot lists and gallery delivery emails.

Copyright and trust
In UK law the photographer usually owns copyright in their photos. For wholly computer-generated images, the position is different; see who owns AI-generated content in the UK? Don't upload client images to tools that train on your uploads unless your contract allows it. Never pass off AI-generated images as real photos in your portfolio.
