Can accountants use AI?
Short answer
Yes. Accountants in the UK already use AI for drafting emails, summarising documents, suggesting bookkeeping categories and speeding research. They remain responsible for advice, filings and client confidentiality. ChatGPT alone is not practice software and should not hold full client files in a personal account.
Sensible uses
- Drafting engagement letters, chase emails and plain-English explanations of tax concepts (then check against GOV.UK / legislation)
- Turning messy notes into structured checklists
- Bookkeeping apps that suggest categories from bank feeds (can AI do my bookkeeping?)
- Internal research with sources you verify
What still needs a person
- Signing accounts, tax returns and advice clients rely on
- Judgement on grey areas, elections and planning
- Client identity and sensitive data: prefer Business/Enterprise plans with admin controls, or keep data inside your practice software
HMRC filings go through HMRC services or recognised software, not a chat bot. See can ChatGPT do my tax return?.
Tools accountants often look at
ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot (if the firm already lives in Outlook/Word), and AI features inside Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage. Compare bookkeeping options in Xero vs QuickBooks. Hub: accountants and bookkeepers.

What is the best AI for accountants?
It depends on the task. Chat for drafting; practice or bookkeeping software for numbers. There is no single winner, same idea as best AI for contractors.
Can accountants use ChatGPT with client data?
Only with care: strip identifiers, check your firm's policy, and prefer workspace plans that do not train on business data by default. See can I put customer data into ChatGPT? and is ChatGPT GDPR compliant?.
Will AI replace accountants by 2030?
Routine drafting and categorisation will keep speeding up. Advisory, sign-off and complex judgement still need people. Treat date-specific "replace by 2030" claims with caution; none of them are official forecasts from HMRC or the professional bodies.
