AI for trades

Short answers for plumbers, electricians, builders and other trades using AI for quotes, calls and admin.

  • Are trade jobs safe from AI?
Most hands-on trade jobs are safe from being replaced by AI. Software cannot fix a boiler, wire a consumer unit or slate a roof, and much UK work needs qualified, accountable people. What AI changes is office work: calls, quotes, chasing payment and marketing. Fuller version: will AI replace tradespeople?.
  • Can accountants use AI?
Yes. Accountants in the UK already use AI for drafting emails, summarising documents, suggesting bookkeeping categories and speeding research. They remain responsible for advice, filings and client confidentiality. ChatGPT alone is not practice software and should not hold full client files in a personal account.
  • Can AI help with CIS?
Yes, with the admin around CIS, but not the HMRC parts. AI can draft invoices that split labour from materials, check monthly deduction statements against your records, and explain the rules in plain English. Contractors still have to register, verify subcontractors with HMRC, make the right deductions and file monthly returns. Use HMRC-recognised software or an accountant for the filing.
  • Can AI help with health and safety risk assessments?
Yes, as a first draft. AI can list likely hazards for a job, suggest controls and lay out a risk assessment or method statement. But the law cares about what you actually do on site. HSE says employers must identify hazards, assess the risks and control them; if you employ five or more people, you must record the significant findings.
  • Can ChatGPT write a quote for a job?
Yes, for the wording, not the price. ChatGPT is good at turning rough site notes into a clear scope of work, a list of what's included and excluded, and polite terms. You still set the price, materials and VAT yourself, and check every line, because it can invent quantities, guess prices and get VAT rules wrong.
  • How are restaurants using AI?
UK restaurants and cafés use AI mainly for guest messages, menu and allergen wording, review replies, shift notes and social posts. Some also use booking tools with automated reminders. It helps the office and front-of-house admin; it does not cook food or replace food hygiene rules.
  • How are retailers using AI?
UK retailers use AI for product descriptions, customer service drafts, review replies, simple demand notes and marketing copy. Larger chains also use it in forecasting and personalisation behind the scenes; a small shop usually starts with chat tools and the AI features already in their ecommerce or till software.
  • How can a handyman use AI?
A UK handyman can use AI to turn job lists into quick quotes, reply to enquiries, text back missed calls, group jobs by area, reply to reviews and keep receipts organised. A free chat tool and a simple job app cover most of it. Gas, most electrical work and structural changes need qualified trades, whatever AI says.
  • How can AI help construction companies?
AI helps UK construction companies with office and coordination work: turning notes into scopes and RFIs, drafting emails, summarising meeting notes, chasing variations and speeding tender admin. It does not replace engineers, quantity surveyors' professional judgement or site safety decisions. Small firms often start with ChatGPT plus their existing job or accounts software.
  • How can AI help estate agents?
AI helps UK estate and letting agents draft listing copy, reply to enquiries faster, summarise viewing feedback and keep review replies consistent. It does not replace valuations, legal checks or regulated advice. Keep personal data of vendors, buyers and tenants out of consumer chat accounts unless your firm has an approved workspace plan and policy.
  • How can builders use AI?
UK builders can use AI for quote wording, missed-call handling, scheduling messages, review replies, social posts and bookkeeping suggestions. Use it for paperwork and communication, not for structural design, load calculations or anything that needs a qualified professional. Price the job yourself, then ask AI to write the covering email.
  • How can carpenters and joiners use AI?
UK carpenters and joiners can use AI to write quotes from site notes, draft customer updates, describe finished work for social media and websites, reply to reviews and chase invoices. AI can help lay out a cutting list or materials list, but you must check every measurement. It can't judge timber, fixings or structural loads.
  • How can a cleaning business use AI?
A UK cleaning business can use AI to price and write quotes, send booking and reminder texts, create cleaning checklists, draft staff rotas, reply to reviews and chase invoices. ChatGPT or Gemini on a free plan handles most of it. Keep customer key codes, alarm details and addresses out of consumer chat tools.
  • How can electricians use AI?
UK electricians can use AI to draft quotes and job descriptions, chase invoices, catch missed calls, reply to reviews and write social posts about completed jobs. It is useful for paperwork around certificates, but it must not do cable sizing, fault diagnosis or BS 7671 calculations. You sign the certificate, so you check the work.
  • How can HVAC and heat pump engineers use AI?
UK HVAC, air conditioning and heat pump engineers can use AI for quotes, customer explanations of running costs and grants, service reminders, call handling and reports. It can explain heat loss concepts, but it must not replace a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation or design software. Refrigerant work needs F-gas qualified engineers.
  • How can landlords use AI?
UK landlords can use AI to write property listings, reply to tenant messages, log and prioritise repair requests, draft inspection checklists and summarise paperwork. Be careful with anything legal. In England the Renters' Rights Act changed tenancy rules from 1 May 2026, including ending section 21 notices, and AI tools can repeat out-of-date rules.
  • How can landscapers and gardeners use AI?
UK landscapers and gardeners can use AI to write quotes, mock up design ideas for customers, plan seasonal maintenance rounds, send weather delay texts, reply to reviews and chase invoices. ChatGPT is good for planting plans and customer emails, but check plant suggestions suit UK conditions and your soil. You stay responsible for drainage, walls and anything structural.
  • How can mechanics and garages use AI?
UK mechanics and garages can use AI to explain repairs to customers in plain English, write quotes and estimates, send MOT and service reminders, answer booking calls, reply to reviews and chase invoices. AI can suggest possible causes of a fault, but it can be confidently wrong. Diagnosis and MOT results must come from your own inspection.
  • How can personal trainers use AI?
UK personal trainers can use AI to draft training programmes you then adapt, write client check-in messages, plan social content, answer enquiries and handle booking admin. It saves hours on writing. Don't let it give medical or diet advice to clients with health conditions, and keep health information out of consumer chat accounts.
  • How can photographers use AI?
UK photographers can use AI to cull and edit faster, remove distractions, write client emails and booking questionnaires, draft captions and blog posts, and reply to enquiries. ChatGPT is good for words; editing apps have AI built in. Be open with clients about heavy AI edits, and check your contract covers how you use AI.
  • How can plumbers use AI?
UK plumbers can use AI to write quotes from their notes, answer or text back missed calls, confirm bookings, reply to reviews and sort receipts for bookkeeping. A free chat tool such as ChatGPT or Gemini covers most writing jobs. Keep pricing, gas work and anything Gas Safe or Water Regulations related in your own hands.
  • How can roofers use AI?
UK roofers can use AI to turn survey notes and photos into quotes, text customers when weather moves a job, catch missed calls while working at height, reply to reviews and chase invoices. Use it for words and admin. Safety planning for work at height, structural judgements and insurance reports stay with you.
  • What is the best AI for contractors?
There is no single "best" AI for contractors. Most UK contractors do best with a free chat tool such as ChatGPT for wording, plus a job app for quotes and invoices, and an AI receptionist if they miss calls on site. Pick by the job that costs you the most time, not by brand.
  • Which AI can help me trade?
If you mean working in a trade (plumbing, electrical, building and so on), start with a free chat tool such as ChatGPT for emails and quotes, a job app for the pipeline, and an AI receptionist if you miss calls on site. This page is about tradespeople, not stock or forex trading.
  • Will AI replace plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople?
Not the hands-on work. AI software can't fix a leak, wire a consumer unit or fit a roof, and hands-on, regulated work in homes is hard to automate. What AI is changing is the office side of a trade: answering calls, writing quotes, chasing invoices and posting online. Trades that use it for admin get time back.
