Does ChatGPT have memory, and can you clear it?
Short answer
Yes. When Memory is on, ChatGPT can remember preferences and details from past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, files and, on some plans, connected apps such as Gmail. You can see what it remembers, correct it, tell it to forget something, or turn Memory off under Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. Turning Memory off doesn't delete your chats.

How to clear it
- Open Settings, then Personalization, then Memory.
- Review the summary or saved memories and delete what you don't want.
- Turn off Reference chat history if you don't want past chats used.
- Delete chats that contain the information too; deleting a chat doesn't always delete a saved memory made from it.
OpenAI says it may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days.
For business use
Memory is handy for remembering your business name, trade and tone. But it can also hold customer details you mentioned. Use a temporary chat for anything sensitive, and turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls on personal plans. Business and Enterprise content isn't used for training by default.
