Is Meta AI safe for privacy?
Short answer
Meta AI is fine for everyday questions, but it isn't private. Meta says it uses your interactions with its AIs to improve AI at Meta, and uses your profile and activity to personalise replies. UK users can object to their public posts and AI chats being used to train its AI. Don't share customer or confidential data with it.
What Meta does with your data
- Your AI chats: Meta's help pages say it uses your interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta. If Meta AI can't answer, it may share your message and general information, such as your region, with selected partners.
- Personalisation: Meta says it uses profile details and interests from your activity across its products to personalise AI responses.
- Ads: in December 2025 Meta began using AI chats to personalise ads in many countries, but reports at the time said the UK, EU and South Korea were excluded.
- Muse: Meta's separate Muse agent has its own privacy policy. Meta says Muse doesn't share your conversations with its ad systems, and you can turn off training in Settings, Data controls.
How to object in the UK
Meta offers a UK objection route through its privacy rights request forms in Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The ICO said in 2024 that Meta must make objecting simple. An objection covers the account you're logged in to and accounts in the same Accounts Centre.
Is it safe for a business?
Use it for public tasks, such as caption ideas. Keep customer names, numbers and messages out of it. For handling personal data, use a business tool with a data processing agreement. See are AI tools secure?
