Can AI do my VAT return?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Partly. AI in bookkeeping apps can read receipts, suggest VAT codes and match bank transactions, which does much of the work. But since April 2022 all VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file through Making Tax Digital compatible software, so a chatbot can't file it. You're still responsible for checking the figures.

What to check before you submit

  • Each purchase has a valid VAT invoice if you reclaim VAT.
  • Zero-rated, exempt and outside-scope items are coded correctly.
  • Reverse charge items, such as overseas software and construction services under the domestic reverse charge, are handled properly.
  • Totals match your bank.

Can a VAT return be amended?

Yes. If the net error is £10,000 or less, or up to £50,000 and no more than 1% of your box 6 figure, correct it on your next return. Larger errors, or deliberate ones, must be reported to HMRC separately (checked 18 October 2026).
