Can ChatGPT do my tax return?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

No. ChatGPT can't file a Self Assessment return with HMRC, and you shouldn't rely on it for your figures. It can explain terms, help you sort expenses into categories and draft questions for your accountant. The return itself goes through HMRC's online service or HMRC-recognised software, and you're responsible for every number on it.

What AI can safely help with

  • Explaining what a box or term means ("what are payments on account?")
  • Turning a messy list of costs into categories you can check against GOV.UK's allowable expenses
  • Drafting a checklist of documents to gather before the deadline
  • Writing a clear email to your accountant or to HMRC
  • Spotting gaps, such as a month with no fuel receipts

What it shouldn't do

  • Calculate your tax bill. Rates, allowances and thresholds change, and AI can quote last year's figures confidently. Use HMRC's own calculation when you file online, or our self-employed tax calculator as an estimate.
  • Decide what's allowable. If you're unsure, GOV.UK says to contact HMRC.
  • Hold your UTR, National Insurance number or bank details. Keep those out of any AI chat.

Making Tax Digital

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates using compatible software. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Several of the HMRC-recognised packages include AI features for categorising transactions; that's the sensible place for AI in your tax admin. A prompt that helps without risk

I'm a UK sole trader [trade]. Here's a list of my costs for the year with no personal details: [list]. Group them into likely Self Assessment expense categories, flag anything that might be personal or capital rather than an allowable expense, and list questions I should ask my accountant. Don't calculate tax.
