Will AI replace accountants and bookkeepers?

Last checked: 17 October 2026 · The AI Till, UK

Short answer

Not wholesale. AI and accounting software are taking over data entry, bank matching and first drafts, and Making Tax Digital is moving more record-keeping into apps. But someone still has to check the numbers, give tax advice, deal with HMRC and take responsibility. Expect the job to change: less typing, more checking and advising.

What's already automated

  • Reading receipts and invoices into your books.
  • Suggesting categories for bank transactions.
  • Drafting reminder emails and summaries.
  • HMRC "nudges" inside Making Tax Digital software that flag likely errors, which HMRC says it is extending to VAT from April 2027.

What still needs a person

  • Judging what's allowable, and planning for tax.
  • Fixing messy records and unusual transactions.
  • Representing you to HMRC. Since May 2026, tax advisers who deal with HMRC must register with it.
  • Spotting when AI has got it wrong.

Why Making Tax Digital matters

MTD for Income Tax started on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000, then over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028. Those people now keep digital records and send quarterly updates, which means more software and, for many, more help from a bookkeeper. HMRC has also published guidelines on using generative AI in tax software. See our Making Tax Digital guide.

For a small business

Use AI to keep your records tidy and ask better questions, then pay an accountant for advice and sign-off. See can AI do my bookkeeping? and our page for accountants and bookkeepers.
