Will AI replace plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople?
Short answer
Not the hands-on work. AI software can't fix a leak, wire a consumer unit or fit a roof, and hands-on, regulated work in homes is hard to automate. What AI is changing is the office side of a trade: answering calls, writing quotes, chasing invoices and posting online. Trades that use it for admin get time back.
Why the tools stay in your hands
- Every job is different: old pipework, odd wiring, access problems, customers changing their minds.
- Much of the work is regulated and needs qualified, accountable people: Gas Safe registration, electrical certification under Part P, building control sign-off.
- Customers want someone they trust in their home.
Robots for site work exist in research and some factories, but there's no sign of one that can do a typical domestic service call.
What AI already does for trades
| Job | What AI does | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Missed calls | Answers or texts back when you're on the tools | What is an AI receptionist? |
| Quotes | Turns rough notes into a clear quote description | Can ChatGPT write a quote? |
| Invoices and chasing | Drafts reminders and payment terms | How to chase a late payment |
| Reviews and social | Drafts review replies and job posts | Can AI reply to Google reviews? |
| Bookkeeping | Matches receipts to bank lines | Can AI do my bookkeeping? |
The real risk
The risk isn't a robot; it's a competitor who answers the phone faster, quotes the same day and follows up every lead. AI makes that easier for a one-person business. Start with the job that costs you the most work now, usually missed calls or quotes. Our best AI tools for tradesmen and ChatGPT for tradesmen guides go further.
Related questions
Which trade jobs are most at risk from AI?
The office tasks around trades (scheduling, quoting, estimating from drawings) are changing fastest. Office roles in larger firms may change; the skilled hands-on roles much less.
Should apprentices still learn a trade?
Nothing in current AI suggests practical trade skills are losing value. Learning to use AI for admin alongside the trade is a sensible extra.
