Missed-call text-back tools for UK small businesses
When you're on a job, in the van or with a client, a missed call is often a missed booking. Missed-call text-back tools reply by SMS when you don't answer, and some answer the phone as an AI receptionist. This guide compares five options we list on The AI Till, using prices checked on each vendor's page in mid-October 2026. Several are US companies priced in dollars, so confirm UK numbers and VAT before you pay.
For a wider receptionist roundup, see AI receptionist tools and AI receptionist for trades.
What "text-back" actually does
Typical flow:
- A caller rings your business number and you don't answer.
- The tool sends a text (and sometimes answers with an AI voice) asking what they need.
- You get a summary by app, email or SMS and call back when free.
That beats a full receptionist when call volume is low, most callers are happy to text, and you mainly need a name, number and job type. A full receptionist (human or AI that books and transfers) is better when callers expect a conversation, you need live booking into a diary, or you get complex quotes on the first call.

When text-back is enough
- You miss a handful of calls a day, not dozens.
- Callers will reply to a text with address, photos or a preferred callback time.
- You already have a booking link or quote form and mainly need the lead captured.
- You're testing whether an AI phone layer is worth a bigger plan.
When you need more than text-back
- Callers are older or prefer to speak, not type.
- You need same-call booking into a calendar.
- Storms, sales or seasonal spikes mean long queues (check overage rates first).
- You want a UK-based human receptionist. Compare UK options such as Moneypenny on our receptionist pages if you need that.
How to choose in one afternoon
- Count missed calls for a normal week.
- Write the three questions you always ask (name, postcode, what's wrong).
- Trial one tool with a UK number forwarded from your mobile.
- Run the numbers in the AI tool break-even calculator: hours saved × your hourly rate vs the monthly fee.

FAQ
Is missed-call text-back the same as an AI receptionist?
Not always. Text-back is the SMS follow-up after a miss. Many AI receptionist products include text-back plus live answering, booking and transfers.
Will these tools work with a UK mobile?
Some do, some need a forwarded UK virtual number. Confirm number support and caller-ID behaviour before you port anything.
Do I need one if I already use a job-management app?
Only if you're still missing calls. Some field-service apps have their own phone add-ons; compare those against a specialist receptionist tool on price per call or minute.
