Quotes by the square metre
A good tiling quote spells out the area, removal of the old floor or tiles, prep (levelling, backer board, tanking), who supplies the tiles, adhesive and grout, the wastage allowance, trims and thresholds, what's not included, and whether the price includes VAT. Work out the numbers with the quote and VAT calculator, then turn them into wording with the AI quote generator. Check your margin with the markup and margin calculator.
If you agree a contract in the customer's home, you must tell them they can cancel within 14 days. If you don't, they can cancel for up to 12 months. Contracts of £42 or less are exempt (GOV.UK: doorstep selling, checked 15 October 2026). The quote generator adds this notice. More: AI quoting tools for tilers.
Extras, subfloors and surprises
Lifting an old floor often turns up uneven or damp subfloors, loose boards or crumbling plaster. If a contract doesn't fix the price, the customer must pay a reasonable price (Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 51), and every service must be done with reasonable care and skill (section 49). Send a short message with a photo, two priced options and a line saying you won't start the extra work until they agree in writing. AI writes these well in seconds; prompts: ChatGPT prompts for tilers.
Dust and old floor tiles
- Silica dust. Cutting tiles, stone and other silica-containing materials can produce very high levels of dust. HSE's guidance for cut-off saws on paving and similar materials is water suppression or on-tool extraction (H or M class), plus a face-fit tested FFP3 mask or equivalent (HSE, checked 15 October 2026).
- Asbestos. HSE says asbestos was widely used in homes until it was banned in 1999. If you find old floor tiles or adhesive that might contain it, stop, confirm what it is or assume it's asbestos, and do a risk assessment (HSE: asbestos FAQs).
AI can draft a risk assessment layout or a customer explanation, but don't rely on it for the safety content itself; use HSE's pages.
Invoices, CIS and accounts
Working for builders as a subcontractor? CIS deductions apply, and the rules changed in April 2026: see CIS changes 2026 and the CIS calculator. QuickBooks includes CIS calculation and submission on all plans. For homeowners, the free invoice template includes GOV.UK's required details, and the payment reminder generator writes polite, firm and final reminders. Compare apps: invoicing apps for tradesmen, invoicing for tilers and bookkeeping for tilers.
Calls, reviews and posts
On your knees with adhesive on your hands, you can't answer the phone. An AI receptionist can take the room, rough size, timescale and a callback number: AI receptionist for tilers. Before-and-after photos of floors and bathrooms are strong marketing; get the customer's permission and turn them into posts with the social post generator. Ask for Google reviews after every job and reply with the review reply generator. More: reviews for tilers and social for tilers.

FAQ
What is the best app for tilers in the UK?
For quoting and invoicing, YourTradebase (£29 a month + VAT) or Tradify (£34 per user a month) suit most sole traders. If you only do a few jobs a month, ServiceM8's free plan covers 30 jobs.
Can AI write a tiling quote?
Yes. Give it the area, prep, materials, wastage, exclusions and price, and it will write clear wording. Work the numbers out yourself first and check the draft before sending.
How do I charge for extra work on a tiling job?
Agree it in writing before you start: a photo, what you found, the options with prices, and the customer's yes by text or email. Without an agreed price the customer only has to pay a reasonable one.
Do tilers need a cancellation notice on quotes?
If you agree the contract in the customer's home, yes. They can cancel within 14 days, or up to 12 months if you don't tell them. Contracts of £42 or less are exempt.
Can old floor tiles contain asbestos?
They can in older properties. HSE says asbestos was widely used until it was banned in 1999. Stop work, confirm what it is or assume it's asbestos, and do a risk assessment.
