How can I use AI to find new customers?
Short answer
Use AI to make yourself easier to find and quicker to reply, rather than to spam. It can tidy your Google Business Profile, answer reviews, write clear service pages, draft quotes in minutes and remind you to follow up. For outreach, it can research local businesses, but UK marketing law still decides who you may email or call.
Five ways that work
- Be found locally. Ask AI to rewrite your Google Business Profile description and service list with your town and the jobs you want more of.
- Answer reviews quickly. Draft replies with AI, then personalise them. See can AI reply to Google reviews?
- Reply first. Most jobs go to whoever replies first. Use AI to draft quotes and enquiry replies, or an AI receptionist for missed calls. See can ChatGPT write a quote?
- Follow up. Ask AI for a polite follow-up message to send three days after a quote.
- Answer customers' questions online. Pages that answer real questions clearly get found, including in Google's AI Overviews. See how to monitor Google AI Overviews
Prospect research for B2B
AI can list local businesses that might need you, such as letting agents for a cleaner, and draft a short, specific introduction. Before you send it:
- Emails and texts: under PECR you generally need consent to email or text individuals, and sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals. Limited companies can be emailed without prior consent if you identify yourself and offer an easy opt-out.
- Phone calls: screen numbers against the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) or its corporate version (CTPS) before cold calling.
- Data: if you collect named contacts, UK GDPR applies. Don't let an AI tool scrape personal details in bulk.

Can AI find leads for me automatically?
Some tools do, but check where the data comes from and whether you're allowed to contact those people. A list that breaks PECR can cost far more than it earns.
