Can ChatGPT write a quote for a job?
Short answer
Yes, for the wording, not the price. ChatGPT is good at turning rough site notes into a clear scope of work, a list of what's included and excluded, and polite terms. You still set the price, materials and VAT yourself, and check every line, because it can invent quantities, guess prices and get VAT rules wrong.
What to let it do
- Turn notes like "replace rad bedroom 2, move to under window, new TRV, flush system" into a scope a homeowner understands
- List exclusions (making good, decorating, skip hire) so there are no arguments later
- Write the covering message and a follow-up a few days later
- Rewrite your standard terms in plain English
What not to let it do
- Price the job. It doesn't know your costs, local rates or supplier prices. Work out the number with our quote and VAT calculator and how to price a job.
- Decide VAT. Standard rate is 20%, but some work is 5% or 0%, and construction work between VAT-registered businesses can fall under the domestic reverse charge. Check with the VAT reverse charge checker.
- Hold customer details. Use "[customer]" and "[address]" and fill them in yourself.

You're helping a UK [trade] write a quote. Turn these notes into: 1) a short scope of work in plain English, 2) what's included, 3) what's not included, 4) any assumptions. British English, no prices, no VAT figures, don't add work I haven't listed. Notes: [paste notes].
