How many messages can I send on free ChatGPT?
Short answer
For ordinary text chats there's no daily number: OpenAI says Free users get "unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards". Uploads, image creation, voice, data analysis and deep research still have separate limits. When you hit one, ChatGPT tells you and shows when it resets. Upgrading resets your limits straight away.

Free users get OpenAI's lighter everyday model, with a "Think" option for harder questions. The stronger reasoning models are on paid plans.
Getting more from the free plan
- Keep each task in its own chat; long threads fill the model's memory quickly.
- Paste the relevant section of a document rather than the whole thing.
- Turn off model training if you're using it for work (see does ChatGPT use my data for training?).
