Is Grok safe to use?
Short answer
Grok is fine for general questions if you change two settings, but it isn't the place for customer or staff data. Its FAQ says your chats may be used to train its models unless you turn off "Improve the model", and authorised staff may review conversations. The ICO opened a formal investigation into Grok in February 2026.
Settings to change
- Turn off training: in the app, Settings, then Data Controls, then deselect "Improve the model". On grok.com, Settings, then Data. This covers new conversations only.
- Use Private Chat (the ghost icon) for anything you don't want kept. Those chats are deleted within 30 days and aren't used for training.
- Check share links. Public share links can be indexed by search engines. You can revoke them at grok.com/share-links.
- Decide on X data. "Personalize Grok using X" lets Grok use your X activity; switch it off if you don't want that.
Sending thumbs up or down feedback can still be used for training, even with the setting off.
The UK regulators
On 3 February 2026 the ICO opened formal investigations into X Internet Unlimited Company and X.AI LLC over Grok's processing of personal data and its potential to produce harmful sexualised images. The ICO says it hasn't reached a view on whether the law was broken. Ofcom is separately investigating X under the Online Safety Act. Neither has announced a final outcome.
For business use
The company says it doesn't use content from business and enterprise customers to improve its models. On a personal account, follow the rules in how to use AI safely at work: no customer names, no financial details, no staff information.
