Is Perplexity safe and private?
Short answer
Perplexity can use your searches to improve its AI models unless you switch that off. Its help centre says to turn off "AI Data Retention" in your account settings (called "AI Data Usage" on mobile); this applies from then on, not to data already collected. Perplexity says Enterprise data is never used for training, so use that for business information.
How to switch off training
- Select your profile icon, then Account Settings.
- Open Preferences.
- Turn off AI Data Retention (AI Data Usage in the mobile app).
Perplexity says the opt-out covers data collected after you turn it off.
Third-party models
Perplexity runs searches through several AI models. Its help centre has an article on whether those model providers train on your data; read it if you're choosing models for sensitive work.
Is it safe for business use?
For general research, such as regulations, suppliers or product specs, it's fine with training switched off. For anything containing customer or staff details, use Enterprise or a tool with business data terms. Whatever you use, open the cited sources before relying on an answer.
