WhatsApp Business and AI drafting for UK small shops
Many small shops already take orders and questions on WhatsApp. The useful question is not "which viral AI bot sells for me", but how to reply faster without inventing prices or breaking UK marketing rules. This guide sticks to WhatsApp Business as Meta provides it, then AI drafting with tools we already list. Tool prices below were checked on each provider's page on 14 or 15 October 2026.
Start with WhatsApp Business, not a mystery bot
Meta's WhatsApp Business app is free to download and is aimed at small businesses. It adds labels, quick replies, a business profile and catalogues. Meta also documents a Meta Business Agent that can chat with customers on WhatsApp; check Meta's own help pages for what it can and cannot do in your country, because features change (WhatsApp Business help: Meta Business Agent).
Do not paste card details into a chat you do not control, and do not promise a "fully automatic WhatsApp salesperson" unless you have tested the product yourself on a UK number.
Where AI helps today
Use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to draft replies, product blurbs and FAQ answers, then paste the checked text into WhatsApp yourself.
| Tool | Published price (checked) | Sensible use with WhatsApp |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free plan available; paid plans (Go, Plus, Business, Enterprise) priced per user per month on OpenAI's pricing page | Draft replies, product answers, opening hours messages |
| Claude | Free plan $0; Pro $20 a month or $17 a month on annual ($200 up front) | Longer policies, careful wording, British English edits |
| Tidio | Free plan; Starter from 24.17 a month billed annually (100 billable conversations); Lyro AI from 32.50 a month | Website chat; only use WhatsApp features if Tidio's current plan shows them for your account |
Prices are from our tools data (checked 14–15 October 2026). Currency on Tidio's page was not clearly GBP when checked, so treat the figure as published, not converted.
A simple workflow that stays honest
- Save your prices, lead times and opening hours in a note you trust.
- When a customer asks on WhatsApp, copy their question into ChatGPT or Claude with a prompt that forbids inventing stock or prices.
- Check the draft against your note, then send it from WhatsApp Business.
- Keep payment on a proper checkout (your site, SumUp, Square, invoice) rather than asking people to send card numbers in chat.
Prompt: reply to a WhatsApp product question
Write a short WhatsApp reply from [shop name] to this customer message: [paste]. Use only these facts: [price, size, colour, lead time, collection or delivery]. If something isn't in the facts, say I'll check and get back to you. Friendly British English, under 80 words. Don't invent discounts or stock.
Prompt: opening hours and collection
Write a WhatsApp quick reply for [shop name]: we are open [hours], collection from [address or "ask for the hatch"], orders placed after [time] are ready next working day. British English, under 60 words.
Marketing rules that matter on WhatsApp
WhatsApp messages to individuals for marketing are electronic mail under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). The ICO's direct marketing guidance says you normally need consent to send marketing by electronic mail to individuals, with a limited soft opt-in for similar products where someone bought or negotiated from you and you gave a clear chance to refuse (ICO: electronic mail marketing). Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals for this purpose. Service messages the customer needs (order ready, appointment time) are different from promotional blasts — keep the difference clear.
What we are not recommending yet
We have not independently verified UK pricing or contract terms for every third-party "WhatsApp AI agent" that ranks in search. Until a tool is on our directory with a checked price, treat vendor claims carefully. For missed phone calls rather than chat, see missed-call text-back tools and unified inbox tools.

FAQ
Can AI take WhatsApp payments for me automatically?
Only if you use a payment product that WhatsApp and your bank both support, and you have checked the fees yourself. Do not ask customers to send card numbers in a normal chat.
Is WhatsApp Business free?
The WhatsApp Business app is free to download. Separate WhatsApp Business Platform / API pricing from Meta or partners is a different product — check Meta's current pages before budgeting.
Do I need consent to message customers on WhatsApp?
For marketing messages to individuals, PECR usually requires consent (or soft opt-in where it applies). Transactional updates about an order the customer placed are treated differently — still be clear and offer a way to stop marketing.
