How do you use AI on your phone?
Short answer
To use AI on your phone, install a free app such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and sign in, or use the AI built into your phone: Gemini on most Android phones and Apple Intelligence on recent iPhones. You can type, talk out loud or point your camera at something and ask about it.
Three ways in
| Option | Phones | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot apps | iPhone and Android | Free plans, paid plans for more use |
| Gemini built in | Most Android phones | Free, with paid Google AI plans |
| Apple Intelligence | Recent iPhones | Free; see is Apple Intelligence free? |
Useful jobs on the go
- Voice: talk through a quote or customer reply while driving between jobs (hands-free only). See does Gemini have voice chat?
- Camera: photograph a part, label or fault code and ask what it is. Check anything safety-related with the manufacturer.
- Quick writing: turn a voice note into a tidy text or email.
- Receipts: snap receipts into your bookkeeping app, many of which read them automatically.
Stay safe
Turn on a screen lock and don't save customer details in chat histories. Check your training settings in each app: see does ChatGPT use my data for training? Never use a phone while driving except hands-free.
