What happened to ChatGPT Atlas, and are AI browsers safe?
Short answer
OpenAI has retired ChatGPT Atlas, its AI web browser, and says it no longer gets updates. PCMag reported that OpenAI was retiring it less than a year after launch, with browsing moving into the ChatGPT desktop app. Your ChatGPT chats are unaffected, but Atlas bookmarks, history and passwords don't transfer automatically.
Why it was retired
PCMag reported that OpenAI announced the retirement alongside a revamped ChatGPT desktop app, which combines a built-in browser, the Codex coding tool and ChatGPT Work. PCMag quoted an OpenAI staff member giving 9 August as the target date, and reported that the planned Windows version of Atlas was cancelled. OpenAI said the new features build on what it learned from Atlas. OpenAI's pricing page now lists the built-in browser on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.
If you used Atlas
- Import any bookmarks you exported into another browser.
- Import exported passwords into a password manager, then delete the CSV file.
- Sign in to websites again in your new browser.
- Uninstall Atlas from your Mac.
- Removing Atlas doesn't cancel your ChatGPT subscription.
If you didn't export your data, OpenAI says to contact its support, but recovery isn't guaranteed.
What OpenAI says about your Atlas data
- Bookmarks, open tabs and history don't transfer automatically.
- Cookies and signed-in sessions don't carry over. Sign in again, and don't share cookie or session files with anyone.
- ChatGPT conversations are separate from Atlas data, so you can keep using them in ChatGPT.
- Atlas browser memories are separate from ChatGPT memories. Deleting your ChatGPT chats doesn't delete Atlas memories, cookies or other Atlas data, and OpenAI says not to assume that uninstalling Atlas deletes it either. Use OpenAI's Privacy Portal or support for Atlas data requests.
- The default browser promotion gave temporary higher limits only in Atlas. OpenAI says it didn't create a paid subscription or an automatic charge.
A worked example
Say you run a small lettings office in Leeds and two staff used Atlas on work Macs. OpenAI's advice for workspace admins is to share the retirement article, move people to an approved browser and update any internal guides that mention Atlas. So you:
- Check each Mac's Downloads folder for exported bookmarks and password files.
- Import bookmarks into your chosen browser and passwords into your password manager.
- Delete the password CSV files, as they hold readable passwords.
- Ask OpenAI support about any Atlas data you still need before deleting local browser data.
- Uninstall Atlas and update your staff handbook.
Are AI browsers safe?
They carry a specific risk: prompt injection. A web page can hide instructions that trick an AI agent into doing something you didn't ask, such as revealing data or clicking a link. The NCSC warns that prompt injection may never be fully solved. Sensible precautions:
- Don't let an AI agent use sites where you're signed in to banking or payments.
- Approve important actions yourself.
- Use separate browser profiles for AI agents.
The NCSC explains why: current language models don't keep a firm boundary between instructions and data inside a prompt. Its advice for anyone building these tools is to limit what the AI can do, rather than hoping to block every bad instruction. For a small business, that means giving an AI browser as little access as the job needs.

Common mistakes
- Leaving password CSV files in Downloads after importing them.
- Assuming uninstalling Atlas wipes its data. OpenAI says not to assume that.
- Thinking Atlas was your subscription. Your ChatGPT plan carries on until you cancel it.
- Giving any AI browser your banking session. Keep money and agents apart.
