AI bookkeeping tools for plumbers in the UK
For plumbers and heating engineers, bookkeeping is mostly receipts: merchant counter slips, fuel, parts bought on the way to an emergency job. Lose them and you pay tax on money you've already spent. Bookkeeping apps that read a photo of a receipt and match it to your bank feed make the evening paperwork a few minutes' work, and Making Tax Digital now makes digital records compulsory for many sole traders.
Prices were re-checked on each provider's own page; the date is next to each one. Rules and figures from GOV.UK are linked where they're used.
Merchant receipts and van costs
Snap each receipt when you get it and let the app match it to the bank transaction. Split materials you recharge to a customer from tools and consumables. Van and mileage choices are covered in our van costs guide.
Making Tax Digital
If your turnover (not profit) was over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025, you should already be keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates; the threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028 (GOV.UK). See our Making Tax Digital guide and check software on HMRC's finder (GOV.UK).
VAT on heat pumps and subcontract work
If you're VAT-registered, installing heat pumps and other energy-saving materials in homes is zero-rated until 31 March 2027 (GOV.UK), so your software needs the right VAT codes. If you also work for builders under CIS, keep every deduction statement: QuickBooks includes CIS on all plans (checked 15 October 2026).
