Are there any UK-based AI tools?
Short answer
Yes, though the best-known chatbots are not British. ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Grok come from US companies and DeepSeek from China. Google DeepMind, the lab behind Gemini, is headquartered in London, and UK firms such as Synthesia (AI video) and Wayve (self-driving) are well known. The government's £500 million Sovereign AI Unit now backs more UK AI start-ups.
UK AI you may come across
| Company | Based | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Google DeepMind | London | Google's AI lab, behind the Gemini models |
| Synthesia | London | AI video with presenter avatars, used for training and explainer videos |
| Wayve | UK | Self-driving technology, grown out of Cambridge research |
| Cosine | UK | AI coding agents that can run on a customer's own systems |
| Doubleword | UK | Tools for running AI models inside your own secure environment |
Cosine and Doubleword were among the first companies backed by the Sovereign AI Unit in April 2026.
Does it matter where the AI is from?
For most small businesses, what matters more is where your data goes and what the provider can do with it. Practical steps:
- Use business plans, which usually don't train on your data. See does ChatGPT Business train on my data?
- Ask about UK data residency. OpenAI lists data residency in regions including the UK as a business feature, and Microsoft and Google offer regional data options on business plans.
- Be cautious with tools that store data in countries without UK adequacy, such as China. See is DeepSeek safe to use?
