ChatGPT prompts for pubs and bars (UK)
These prompts cover writing pubs and bars do every week: event posts, allergen notices, booking messages, tip policies and review replies. Fill in the [brackets], paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and check the draft before you use it. AI tools can get licensing and measures rules wrong — check those yourself. Rules below were checked on 15 October 2026.
Never let an AI tool invent which allergens a dish contains. Use it to word the notice, then fill facts from your own records.
Licensing and service (sourced basics only)
1. Staff reminder: personal licence and DPS
Write a short staff-room notice reminding the team that alcohol sales on our premises need the right authorisation: our premises licence is held by [name], the designated premises supervisor is [name], and anyone selling alcohol who doesn't hold a personal licence must be authorised by a personal licence holder. Plain English, British spelling, under 120 words. Don't invent licence numbers.
In England and Wales, businesses that sell alcohol on a permanent basis need a premises licence from the local licensing authority, and premises that sell alcohol need a designated premises supervisor who holds a personal licence (with limited exceptions for some community premises). Anyone who does not hold a personal licence must be authorised to sell alcohol by a personal licence holder (GOV.UK: alcohol licensing).
2. Age verification door and bar notice
Write a short, firm notice for the door and bar saying we operate Challenge [21/25], we will ask for photo ID if you look under [age], and we refuse service without acceptable ID. List acceptable ID as [passports, photocard driving licences, PASS hologram cards — edit to match our policy]. British spelling, under 80 words.
Mandatory licensing conditions include adoption of an age verification policy (GOV.UK alcohol licensing guidance on mandatory conditions). Match the notice to the policy on your premises licence.
3. Weights and measures: what we sell by the glass
Turn this into a clear staff cheat-sheet for drinks we sell by the glass at [pub name]: draught beer and cider in [third / half / two-thirds pint / multiples of half pint]; still wine in [125ml / 175ml]; gin, rum, vodka and whisky in [25ml or 35ml — only one size on these premises]; fortified wine in [50ml / 70ml]. Say that sparkling wine by the glass has no specified quantity on GOV.UK's list. British spelling, table format, no other legal advice.
GOV.UK lists specified quantities for alcohol sold by the glass: draught beer and cider in third, half, two-thirds of a pint and multiples of half a pint; still wine 125ml or 175ml (or multiples); gin, rum, vodka and whisky in 25ml or 35ml measures (not both on the same premises); fortified wine 50ml or 70ml (or multiples). There are no specified quantities for sparkling wine by the glass (GOV.UK: specified quantities).
Food, allergens and events
4. Allergen notice for the bar menu
Write a short notice for our bar menu and boards telling customers that allergen information for every dish and snack is available [in the allergen folder at the bar / from any member of staff], and asking them to tell us about any allergy before they order. Friendly, British spelling, under 60 words. Don't say any dish is "allergen-free".
If you sell loose food, you must give allergen information for the 14 regulated allergens. See the café prompts and FSA links in ChatGPT prompts for cafés and restaurants.
5. PPDS label for packed bar food
Write a label for [item, such as a cheese and pickle sandwich] that we pack on site before customers choose it. Ingredients from my recipe: [paste]. Give the name of the food and a full ingredients list with any of the 14 UK allergens in bold. Don't add ingredients I didn't list.
Prepacked-for-direct-sale food must show the name and full ingredients with allergens emphasised (FSA PPDS guidance).
6. Quiz or live music event post
Write a Facebook post and a 200-character Instagram caption for [event] at [pub name] on [day, date] from [time]. Include [whether food is served], how to book ([link or phone]), and any age rule ([for example under-18s welcome until 8pm with an adult]). Warm, no fake "selling fast" lines, British spelling.
Regulated entertainment can be a licensable activity; check what your premises licence already allows before advertising new entertainment (GOV.UK: alcohol licensing).
Staff, tips and reviews
7. Written tipping policy
Write a short tipping policy for our pub team covering card and cash tips, that all tips go to workers without deductions, how they're shared ([method]), when they're paid, and that staff can see the tip records. British spelling, under 200 words.
All tips must be passed to workers without deductions; tips don't count towards the National Minimum Wage (GOV.UK: tips at work).
8. Private hire booking and deposit
Write a short private-hire booking policy for our [function room / snug]. Deposit [£amount] to secure the date; final numbers [days] before; cancel with [days] notice for a full refund; less notice means [what happens to the deposit]. Fair, plain English, under 150 words, British spelling.
A term requiring a consumer who cancels to pay a disproportionately high sum may be unfair (CRA 2015 Sch 2 para 5).
9. Reply to a bad review
A customer left this review: [paste]. Write a calm public reply from me, [name], [licensee / manager]. Thank them, apologise for [specific issue] without arguing, say what we've done ([if anything]), and invite them to email [address]. No private details, British spelling, under 100 words.
10. Job ad for bar staff
Write a short job ad for [role] at [pub name] in [town]. Hours [pattern], pay [£amount] an hour (at or above National Minimum Wage), main duties [list], how to apply [email]. No exaggerated claims, British spelling, under 150 words.
Check the rate with the National Minimum Wage checker.

FAQ
Do I need a personal licence to work behind the bar?
Not always to be employed — but sales must be authorised by a personal licence holder, and the DPS must hold a personal licence (GOV.UK alcohol licensing).
What measures of gin can I sell?
Either 25ml (and multiples) or 35ml (and multiples) on the same premises — not both (GOV.UK specified quantities).
